A campus beautification committee led by Mrs S A Mannoni with Martha Stoltz and Mrs Mariam Mih will transform the Neosho County Junior College campus into a beauty spot. The piece also lists population figures from the Kansas Department of Agriculture for Allen, Neosho, Wilson, Woodson counties and area towns, totaling 54 883 in the four county area.
Neo sho School Dist 101 and Chanute Dist 413 trustees approved courtesy season passes for the Neosho County Junior College home basketball schedule. Frank N. Bills of Severy narrowly escaped tragedy when a truck bed touched power lines six and a half miles south of Yates Center. He leapt clear after hearing a crack and ensuring he touched nothing. The electric company responded to restore service and repair the lines.
A barn blaze near Cherokee caused 2000 in damage as Crawford County Rural Volunteer Fire Department fought flames. Fire chief blamed a misdirected call that cost about 20 minutes after wrong addresses delayed the McCune and Crawford units and left more of the barn at risk.
A planter west side of the parking lot east of Lincoln and north of First, once sparse, now yields three cantaloupes about baseball size. Neighbor Scherel Booe keeps the south planter weeded and reports the crop ready for harvest.
In 1969 the Smithsonian houses a running scale model of the Huber steam traction engine, three feet long, made by Moran resident and hobbyist Raymond T. Stout. The model, displayed with his name, honors his life as a Treasury Department accountant who died January 17, 1969. Stout also crafted a model of the Altman Taylor engine from 1892, also on display at the museum.
The Associated Press reports severe storms and tornadoes pounded the Midwest and central states. Injuries and property damage occurred in Missouri Arkansas Illinois and Illinois towns including Deer Creek and Troy. Quincy and O Hare Airport logged heavy rain. cold air followed with snow warnings for mountain regions.
Spaceflight report from Moscow says Soyuz 6 lifted off carrying Lt. Col. Georgy Shonin and Flight Engineer Valery Kubasov. One task noted is welding metals in weightless conditions, seen as a step toward an operational space platform. Both crew members reportedly feel fine.
Villanova University students organize Operation Mail Call Vietnam to flood Vietnam with letters and cards for Christmas. Cochairs Robert Breslin and Thomas Treacy say the nonpolitical effort boosts morale and shows Americans care. Volunteers screen mail to remove propaganda and inappropriate content.

Washington AP reports Lt. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey will leave as director of Selective Service on February 16 to become advisor to the President on manpower mobilization. A civilian successor will be named soon to head the draft, while Hershey trains the new director and aids a transition to a youngest-first system.
Wealthy Las Vegas landowner Dean Petersen escaped from a kidnapping plot that carried him 450 miles to Reno. Two suspects, Joe Lischko and William McCoole, were arrested while a third suspect remained at large. Petersen told police he was held in a trailer bound with rope and handcuffed, but he broke free and fled to a supermarket to summon help. The ransom was assembled in Las Vegas and may have involved an air delivery planned for Reno.
Four-county harvest runs strong with corn sorghum and soybeans in good to high quality. Prices show soybeans 2.14, corn 1.12, sorghums 1.70 per cwt. Harvest progress about 50 percent with wheat seeding rising while below normal due to low wheat prices. County agents forecast 20 to 25 percent under normal corn acreage and 50 percent of next year's wheat planned seeded.
President Nixon gathers Vietnam policy advisers as Gen. Wheeler reports on the war zone. Laird hints at a lighter combat role and casualty low in Saigon. Humphrey endorses Nixon policies but warns of home front pressure as a new Selective Service director is named.
Cloudy and cool with occasional showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the 60s. Rep Garner E. Shriver announces Rep John B. Anderson of Illinois will speak at a 4th District Republican fundraising dinner in Wichita on November 21. Anderson is the third ranking Republican and is chairman of the House Republican conference.
