Parade Highlights Chanute Fall Festival with 1965 Winners

The 22nd Chanute Fall Festival Parade showcased strong concern for the nation’s future with top honors to Cub Scout Den 4 Pack 3 Murray Hill for Seeds of the Future. Royster Junior High won second with Wheel of Progress supporting a school bond vote, while Brownie Troop 28 claimed third.

New ILC Plant Manager Named for Chanute Facility

Earl H. DeVries appointed as plant manager of the Industrial Lamp Company Chanute plant effective today. He succeeds Chester Cwik, transferred to open a sixth ILC plant in Ocala Florida. DeVries, longtime purchasing agent for ILCs Elkhart home office, and his wife Lola have three children. Cwik will lead expansion efforts from Chanute to Ocala after two years in charge.

Beer License Is Surrendered by South Side Tavern

The South Side tavern at 9 S Santa Fe surrendered its beer license to the police department on Saturday. Police Chief Lige Matlock had notified operators that revocation proceedings would begin if not turned in before the city commission meeting. The tavern had recent fights including an October 2 incident leaving a bystander severely cut. The license was held by George W. Smith.

Night voter registration opens with extended hours

The Chanute city clerk’s office will stay open until 9 pm each night this week through Friday to register voters for the October 26 school bond election. Daytime hours also available. Friday is the final registration day and only residents of Chanute must register if they did not vote in the last general election, moved, changed name, or are voting for the first time.

Johnson Urged by Doctors to Rest During Recovery

President Johnson, after his toughest night since surgery, was advised by doctors to rest and limit official duties for a couple of weeks. He still met with Vice President Humphrey and summoned Secretary Rusk, while reading reports and signing papers including nominating Dr. Phillip Randolph Lee to a welfare post.

School Bond Discussion At Chamber Luncheon

Fifty six reservations were received for a Chamber of Commerce lunch tomorrow at the Tioga Hotel where the Oct 26 school bond election will be discussed. A school steering committee will explain both bond proposals and their impact on taxpayers and education. The two measures cover Neosho County Junior College and Unified School District 413.

Big U S Offensive Pursues Viet Cong

U S troops pressed large offensives north of Saigon and in the central highlands, with tallies of 75 Viet Cong killed and 48 captured. In the Iron Triangle, paratroopers of the 173rd Airborne Brigade reported 46 enemy deaths. The operation Shiny Bayonet involved the 1st Cavalry Division with 500+ suspected Viet Cong in the central highlands, while B52 bombers supported initial landings.

Senators fall short on cloture in union shop vote

Washington AP reports 45 supports 47 against invoking cloture on a bill to ban state union shop restrictions. The 92 senators present needed 62 for cloture, so the measure failed and the debate would continue, with plans for another showdown likely later in the week.

Chanute teen questioned after daytime complaint

A 16 year old Chanute boy was questioned by police after a complaint that he followed another boy by car and tried to start a fight. He admitted drinking but denied it and provided no information. He was released to his parents as investigators continue.

Cooler Tonight Fair Tuesday Temperatures Fall Across Kansas

Weather area forecast calls for cooler tonight with diminishing winds and generally fair skies. Tuesday should be fair with low temperatures in the mid 40s and highs around 70. In Topeka area autumn conditions return as Kan sas ends a heat spell with upper 60s to 70s today and cooler overnight lows ranging from the lower 30s to upper 40s.

Reward Upped After Deer Shot at Santa Fe Park

Bill Dever of 1401 S Allen adds $10 to the reward fund for information leading to arrest and conviction of the person who shot a city deer at Santa Fe Park Thursday night. The city offers $100 and Park Supt. Clem Keller adds $100. no other developments were reported.

Open House Draws 405 Visitors at Neosho Memorial Hospital

Neosho Memorial Hospital hosted an open house showing 405 visitors the new wings X ray and redecorated lobby. The pediatrics wing was a highlight funded by Nora E. and C D Thompson and the 370000 expansion includes a future kitchen and cafeteria. Hospital trustees staff and auxiliary assisted in guiding tours.

Batteries Stolen From Oil Unit and Cars

John Curtis reports two batteries stolen from an oil well pulling unit parked at Davis Pipe and Supply at 14th and Steuben. Police also received theft reports from Mrs. Earl Moore about a tool kit taken from her son's Honda and Ned Allen reporting a missing spare tire and wheel from his car.

Intercepted Letter Dear Cha Stirs Curiosity at Hospital Open House

An X-ray image of a gall bladder drew top interest at the hospital open house yesterday. It remained unnamed but observers compared its appearance to figures linked with LBJ.
