United Way volunteers in Chanute launch the 1976 drive with a reduced goal of 30000 dollars down from 32000. Local nine agencies including Cerebral Palsy, Red Cross and Salvation Army receive funding, with door to door campaigns set to start October 18 and a citywide appeal from officials.

The plan aims to complete changes within six to twelve months.

Neosho County official Glen Neely says moisture delays milo and soybean harvests and postpones wheat seeding while boosting fall pastures. The Federal Energy Administration under Congressional action removed price controls from stripper oil. Stripper oil, from wells averaging under 10 bpd, will face about $14.15 per 40 gravity crude, with old oil and new oil kept at tiered prices. Conoco first posted $14.15, other majors likely to follow, effective Sept. 1. Potential for price wars if refinery surpluses emerge.
