A Kansas National Guard unit may relocate from Chanute unless one more commissioned officer is found. Openings exist for three officers. former officers from Army Air Force Navy or Marines may qualify, with eligibility standards including sergeant major rank and age limits.
A United States Air Force B47 jet bomber crashed 100 feet from an operating oil well near Galva Kansas yesterday but the four crew members parachuted to safety. The aircraft from Smoky Hill Air Force Base Salina developed trouble after takeoff and burned on the ground. no damage to the well was reported. Crew: Maj Robert Hughes Capt William Beckley 1st Lt Jerald Weimer Capt James Harding.

The Paola to Humboldt and Eureka to Humboldt lines halted after a restraining order blocked sale to Producers Pipe Line Co. and Sinclair Pipe Line Co. Sinclair denied owning the lines and halted acceptance of oil.

A Severy man Bill Max Copeland 22 and his wife Alberta Ruth Copeland 20 died when a pickup stalled or turning on Kansas Highway 96 four miles north and 3 1/2 miles east of Severy were hit by two cars. The two vehicles were driven by Billy Lee Van Buskirk 16 and Leonard Van Buskirk 39. The couple’s two year old son unharmed beside the highway. Copeland worked at a Wichita aircraft plant.
A U S Navy relief mission reports mounting deaths and worsening floods in eastern Mexico after Hurricane Janet. Rescue efforts center on the carrier Saipan with 14 helicopters and 12 doctors aboard. Officials warn the death toll will climb as refugees endure perilous conditions. A separate Puebla report cites about 40 dead from a Janet linked tornado.

Gov. Fred Hall named Chanute motorist Bill Young to the Business and Organization panel for the Governor's Highway Safety Conference in Topeka on October 10.
