Bat in Chanute Home Ejected by Police
Police were called at 1 15 a m to remove an intruder from a Chanute woman’s bedroom. The interloper proved to be a bat, which was taken outdoors and released. FHA Officials Meet Here in Two Day Credit briefing
About 30 FHA credit officials from eastern Kansas gathered at the Tioga Hotel for a two day briefing on the revised FHA supervised credit program. Mil ton Raven of Topeka led the meeting noting benefits for rural communities and farmers under the 1961 farm bill. The program allows low interest long term loans to nonprofits and water user associations and loans for soil conservation measures. The meeting continues tomorrow.

Tragedy Strikes Five Friends Near School in Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS AP Five Franklin Central High students died after their car stalled on train tracks near the school as a passenger train hit the vehicle. The victims, Robert Altmeyer 17 and four friends, along with Altmeyer's sister and two others, were from the same block in southeastern Marion County. The crash occurred minutes after 2:40 p.m. at a crossing where the train, traveling 70 to 80 mph, struck the car, killing all five aboard. In Fremont Nebraska another crash left a family dead when a car collided with a semi truck, killing Dallas Talkington 46 and his wife and six children. The driver of the truck was treated for a head wound.
