Power pool study backs interconnection of Chanute plants

Chanute and six eastern Kansas cities formed the Kansas Municipal Power Pool to assess interconnecting municipal plants. Burns and McDonnell report finds interconnection economically and technically feasible, with member cities including Erie Iola Coffeyville Ottawa and Kansas City Kansas. Fire damages upstairs of Evergreen complex. loss over four thousand

Firefighters fought a blaze that heavily scorched the upstairs area of the six to ten Evergreen complex on Saturday night. The roof damage is tentatively assessed at over four thousand dollars. Fire Chief Brennan ordered a state fire marshal inspection to determine the cause, which may trace to a stairway, with water damages spreading to nearby businesses.

Mrs Mildred Routh Named Director of Nurses at Neosho Memorial

Neosho Memorial Hospital announces Mildred Routh 4228 Central as the new director of nurses succeeding the July resignation of a prior nurse recruitment from Ransom Memorial Hospital Ottawa. Routh has 25 years of nursing experience including head nurse at Mercy Parsons and director of nurses at Okeene Oklahoma.

Fire inspectors kickoff quarterly downtown check

Firemen began a routine quarterly inspection of downtown businesses today. The fall inspection precedes Fire Prevention Week set for next week. Chanute school buildings will also be inspected in the coming days, Fire Chief C. W. Brennan said.

Delegates argued independence of the local congregation is paramount, as discussions paralleled committee debates from last week. Salvation Army to Start Salvage Drive in Chanute Area

The Salvation Army plans a salvage drive in Chanute with 48 hours to 9 a.m. Monday. Supervisor Mike Johnson of Pittsburg says the project will run about two weeks with a pickup truck operating Wednesdays in the southwest city area between 7th and 14th streets. Residents can leave usable items on porches or curbs.

Denver Police Scandal Charges Hit 19 Officers

Denver Governor Steve McNichols announced 19 officers and one civilian face charges in a widening police crime scandal. Dist. Atty. Bert Keating expects four to five more arrests and possible resignations. The case spans burglary payoffs prostitution and possible ties to a crime syndicate.

Pair Bound Over To District Court In Burglary Case

Two Bartlesville youths John Lee McIntyre and Manford Riley Carter waived preliminary hearing in city court after a break in at the drive in theater north of Chanute. They were bound over to district court for trial and remanded to the county jail in lieu of bond.

More than twenty East Germans escaped to West Berlin over the weekend despite tighter border barriers, according to West Berlin police. Among the defectors were at least five Communist border police officers.

State Traffic Fatal to Two

Two people died in Kansas weekend traffic accidents. Joe Parr 47 was struck Friday night on the Topeka road edge after a gusty wind allegedly pushed him into a passing car. Russell Coats of Nevada Iowa contends the wind caused the incident as gusts reached 44 mph. Marcus Walker 36 of Sunflower Village died Saturday in a two car crash on Kansas 10 at De Soto. Four others were injured including Walker’s wife Gloria Walker 36 and daughter Linda Probst 18.

Two Drivers Arrested on DWI Charges

Dale E. Bogle and Gail Shultz both of Chanute were arrested by police Saturday night on DWI charges. Bogle was taken into custody around 9 20 after a minor crash on Main near Lincoln. his 1955 Pontiac hit the rear of Billie R. Quinn's 1960 Chevrolet, with damages estimated at 75 and 10 dollars respectively. Released on 150 dollar bond, Bogle faces a police court hearing Thursday. Shultz was arrested about 10 20 at 14th and Kansas and pleaded guilty in police court today, receiving 60 days in county jail.
