Ith Anniversary of Royal Arch Attended by 200

The 70th anniversary celebration of Chanute Chapter 21, Royal Arch Masons, drew more than 200 from across the state to the Masonic Temple. A full day of conferences and degree work included a class of 38 from distant towns. local Chanute candidates numbered nine.

Fair skies and a warming trend spread across Kansas today after showers and cloudy weather on Sunday Rain fell across the Kansas River valley and counties including Saline Sedgwick Colby and St Francis First freezing temperatures were reported in northwest Kansas Friday morning with readings as low as 30 degrees in Attwood 34 in Colby and St Francis Scattered frost was noted and forecasters expect warmer conditions to continue into Tuesday Overnight low near 60 with Tuesday highs in the 80s to lower 90s and possible scattered showers continuing tonight.

Humboldt Biblesta Parade Draws Thousands on Saturday

Thousands lined Humboldt streets for the third annual Biblesta parade with 31 Biblical floats and 10 bands. Pharoah's Army won the traveling trophy. grand prize went to The Return to the Empty Tomb by Monarch Cement Co. Judges included Giles Thielmann and Charles Pratt.

Fall in Car Fatal To Springfield Tot

A two year old boy named James LeRoy Barlow died Sunday after a fall in the back seat of the car he rode in. He was the son of Rothel Polk. Vernon Browers and his wife cared for him while the mother worked. Browers said the boy fell to the floor after he applied his brakes. Coroner Ralph Thieme ordered an autopsy.

Mrs Reba Jones Involved In Traffic Collision

Mrs Reba Jones 54 of 217 FE 11th was shaken but not seriously injured in a collision at the North Kansas and West Cherry intersection on highway K39 about 525 pm yesterday. Charles Beck 50 of R 2 drove a 1951 Ford east on Cherry while Jones drove a 1957 Mercury north on Kansas. Both front ends were damaged with an estimated $200 in damage to each vehicle.

State Directors Of GI Forum Meet Here

The Kansas State Board of Directors of the American GI Forum met in Chanute at the Tioga Hotel. Delegates from Chanute Parsons Wichita Topeka Kansas City Arkansas City Garden City Hutchinson and Emporia attended. A workshop was planned for October 15 in Hutchinson and the next board meeting for December in Kansas City. The state convention will be held in Topeka May 26-28, 1961. A committee was formed to work with the Kansas Centennial Committee.

Accident Victims Improved After Friday Collision

Ronnie Joe Lock remains unconscious with somewhat improved condition after a car tractor crash west of here and is treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital. Joy Conn, also injured, was transferred to the University of Kansas Medical Center in fair condition.

Burglars Hit Two Lumber Firms Netting 630 Dollars

Thieves cracked safes at Long-Bell Lumber Co. and Chanute Lumber Co. securing 339.13 and 291 dollars plus a new watch. Entry at Long-Bell used a roof opening. Chanute Lumber was entered through a south window. Police dated the break-ins to before 12:30 a.m. with rain timing.

Gordon Is Considered As New A's Manager

Kansas City Athletics said they would talk with Joe Gordon about becoming manager after Parke Carroll, the general manager, announced the plan during the World Series prep. Gordon, former Detroit manager, denied being hired, while manager Bob Elliott and three coaches were fired.

Three Women Slain in Ashland Grocery-Singing Family Tragedy

Three women in an Ashland household were found stabbed to death in a grisly weekend killing. A 10 inch knife and bloody footprints led investigators to a barefoot suspect, the estranged husband of one victim, jailed for questioning. The victims are Mrs. John D. Martin 31 her mother Ethel Ogle 63 and her grandmother Everlena Ogle 82. Police described the case as the work of a sadistic killer or one bent on revenge.

Buffalo Youth Killed in Crash

A 17 year old rural Buffalo resident, Robert W. Thielenhaus, died when his 1955 Chevrolet failed to negotiate a curve, left the road, hit a tree. Four more fatalities, three over the weekend and one today, raised Kansas traffic deaths to 354 for the year.

Khrushchev Demands U.N. Shake Up as Nehru Opposes

Premier Khrushchev challenged Dag Hammarskjold to resign and urged a three person executive for the United Nations, risking charter changes. Nehru defended the current system while urging caution and seeking no immediate amendments. Khrushchev warned he might withdraw from talks. Nehru urged a slow, agreed approach. King Hussein condemned Soviet tactics against the U.N. and Hammarskjold prepared a reply at the afternoon session.
