Final Attempt To Avert Strike At General Electric
Federal mediators held last-ditch bargaining in New York to avert a nationwide strike by the International Union of Electrical Workers against General Electric Co set for midnight. The IUE vote was 51 to 10 to strike after six weeks of talks over wages and benefits. GE offered a three year contract with 3 percent on signing and 4 percent later, plus escalator removal. the union sought 32 percent yearly raises, a union shop, and more. GE operates 167 plants in 133 cities. 1,226 Americans are listed as Berlin residents.
