The Buffalo Boosters 4-H Club float Wheels of Progress took first place in the gala parade closing the 12th annual Fall Festival sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Golden Ridge school earned second, Rural school third, and Blue school fourth with a Santa Marie themed boat.

School Merger Vote Planned Across Wilson County
Ten northeastern Wilson County school districts approved a consolidation proposal at a Vilas meeting with voting set for October 13. Each district will vote separately on the same day with time and place to be announced locally. The plan targets forming a new district if districts 1 and C-8 plus seven of eight one teacher districts approve the measure.

Dudley admitted the liquor store robbery after officers said he described traveling from Kansas City to Parsons and returning via Chanute to steal whiskey from Ramsey Liquor Store.

Three Men Die In Highway Crash In Oklahoma Floods
A wet highway caused a car to lose control and collide with a truck killing Jerry Dean Whiteacre 22 Jackson E. Hardesky 30 and Lee Wesley Thomas 25 all from Great Bend and El Dorado. The truck driver had minor injuries. Floods forced evacuations near Oklahoma City.

Sidney F Harris 52 Ottawa Herald publisher and Chanute Tribune owner died at St Luke's hospital Kansas City from heart disease and complications after recent surgery in Philadelphia. He helped own several papers including Hutchinson News-Herald and Hawk Eye Gazette along with Chanute Tribune. He was born in Ottawa April 27 1903 attended Culver Military Academy and KU and leaves wife Virginia a daughter and two grandsons. Graveside services for family only set in Hope Cemetery Ottawa. Rockefeller grant funds Menninger mental health division
A $105,000 grant from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund was received by the Menninger Foundation to establish a division of industrial mental health. Dr. William C. Menninger said recruitment of personnel will be the first step as the foundation continues its survey of mental health problems in industry begun in 1954.

A break in at the Virgil Mix store in Neosho County occurred Saturday night when a rear window was taped to muffle sound and broken to steal merchandise. Sheriff Jee Montgomery of Erie said the owner is assessing losses and listed items taken including cigarettes radios towels shoes flashlights toasters cooking utensils shirts ice cream bars candy bread milk lunch meat sugar pens pencils home permanent kits preserves coffee toilet soap and about two dollars in pennies.

Erie Corn Festival crown queen at three day event parade
Thousands lined Main Street for the Erie Corn Festival parade marking the close of a three day celebration. Sonya Rucker of Thayer High School was named queen with Carol Ferguson and Nancy Heilman as princesses. Judges awarded the grand prize to Hillcrest 4-H Club float while 17 floats competed and 20 bicycle riders earned cash prizes.

Anxiety Eases As Eisenhower Rests After Illness
Doctors reported President Eisenhower showed no new complications and remained satisfactory in condition after a night of rest. The 64-year-old leader slept soundly from 8:45 p.m. to 7:10 a.m. with a brief 4:25 to 4:55 a.m. interruption and had a normal vital sign check. Mrs. Eisenhower visited during breakfast and a continued slow progressive cardiogram was noted.

Vehicles Damaged In Galesburg Mishap
A motor car driven by Jack D. Lemon of Mer mit Tex and a pickup driven by Mrs Wendell Shaw collided at the east edge of Galesburg about 11 am Saturday. No injuries were reported. Undersheriff John Phelps said Shaw traveled north on a county road while Lemon turned onto the road from a street. The truck sustained right fender and front damage. the car suffered front damage.

Rabies Shots Save Five Year Old After Fox Bite
Five year old Nancy Bihler of Suffern was bitten by a rabid fox at a Catskill game farm. She received antirabies injections and was rushed to medical care within hours after the attack. State Health Department and local doctor officials urged immediate treatment to prevent potential death. The rabid fox was shot by Roland Lindemann after the incident and its carcass showed rabies. The girl’s family had initially driven away, thinking the bite minor.
