United Fund Kickoff For Ten Day Drive Chanute
The Chanute United Fund kickoff began this morning at the First National Bank. About 75 volunteers attended as Dean Sutcliffe outlined a 10 day drive ending Oct. 12 with a goal of 22 778 09 dollars. Glen Dormois presented 1 000 in checks to George Pinegar as Joe Balch aids dormois in his division. Eight organizations participate including Red Cross Salvation Army Boy Scouts Girl Scouts Cerebral Palsy Mental Health Kansas Children's Service League and USC.

Truck Crash near Parsons Injures Driver. School Truck Damaged
A 1962 Chevrolet driven by Richard L. Breneman, 21, of Parsons R. 1, collided with a 1944 IHC truck from the Parsons State Training School four miles north and two and three-fourths miles west of Parsons. The school truck, parked with no lights, carried three juveniles who were not injured. Breneman sustained a knee injury. Breneman’s truck was a total loss. the training school truck had front bumper damage. Sheriff George Neely investigated at 8:30 PM.

Eastern Kansas Oil Group Honors Weiner At Annual Meeting
Carl Weiner, a 94 year old veteran independent oil producer from Chanute, was named an Oldtimer during the Eastern Kansas Oil and Gas Association annual meeting at the Tioga Hotel. About 70 attended the afternoon session and over 350 joined the banquet at the Masonic Temple. Weiner received a plaque for outstanding service to the industry.

A 1966 International tractor trailer owned by Hugh Breeding Inc of Tulsa burned on US 169 between Humboldt and Jola at about 1:15 a.m. Damage estimated at 1000 dollars.
