Emporia faces its worst water shortage since the 1930s as Lake Kahola gates open releasing ten million gallons daily. The dwindling reservoir, once a 410 acre resort, now holds 217 million gallons with eight days expected for delivery to the dam awaiting rain or snow.
U S officials doubt Russian crude can ease Western Europe shortages as Suez limits tankers. Russia exports only a trickle beyond 3–4 million tons yearly, accounting for under 3 percent of Western Europe demand. France discusses raising monthly oil imports from 20 000 to 100 000 tons, but the amount remains a drop in the bucket.
Elementary teachers in city schools met last night at Murray Hill for a curriculum workshop on lower grade reading. Three discussion groups of 20 minutes covered Differentiated Instruction Methods and Procedures and Texts and Materials. Harold Anderson chaired the event with consultants Mrs. Billy Shumate and Dr. Alvin Morris. Attendance included teachers from all elementary buildings plus Senior High Royster Future Teachers of America and Board of Education members.
Two naval aviation cadets died in a Skyraider collision at 22 000 feet during a tactical training flight near Corpus Christi. Aviation Cadet El mon Kreeves McBroome of Dallas and Marine Corps Second Lt Kenneth Eugene Stalker of Birchaunville Oklahoma were aboard training planes from Cabaniss Field. A Navy spokesman said one plane developed engine trouble and struck the other.
Water usage figures show yesterday at 1,345,000 gallons, down from 1,433,000 the day before. Week-ago yesterday recorded 1,190,000 gallons, with the past seven days totaling 9,364,000 and the prior seven days at 8,621,000.
President Eisenhower designated Ellsworth Bunker, retiring American Red Cross president, as ambassador to India. Bernie Crimmins resigned as Indiana University football coach to take effect January. The annual Yale Vespers will be presented at 8 p.m. December 19 in the Memorial Building. Mrs Margaret Hollenshead, director of elementary music, said details of the program will be announced later as the schools offer the event as a public service.

Fred J. He was reported in good condition at a hospital and attributed the assault to union discord as he sought re election.
The Senior High School drum and bugle corps directed by Helen Anderson won first place among 36 marching units in the Joplin Christmas parade. Kansas rules barred accepting the $100 prize. a trophy was given instead. The 33 girl corps will parade Thursday in Parsons and Saturday in Coffeyville.
In Scranton Pennsylvania Luther Reed receives $14,800 after Orphans Court Judge James Brady ruled the will invalid due to a missing verb in his late wife’s sentence. The clause stated he did not anything I had so I will him $5. Reed’s award totaled $14,805.
Highway Patrolman John Fee sped through three counties to bring a Belize? No. The ailing wife in Fort Scott and a distraught husband in Wichita prompted the rescue. Fee picked up the man at Wichita Municipal Airport and drove 70 miles to Eureka where a bus waited to complete the trip to Fort Scott. The man, who had been working in Phoenix, Arizona, had missed connections and, with the officer’s help, boarded the bus at Eureka to continue to Fort Scott.
Topeka traffic fatalities listed by the State Accident Records Section show no deaths in the last 24 hours. To date in 1956 the total stands at 594, compared with 523 for the same period in 1955.
President Eisenhower designates Dr Lawrence Gridley Derthick as U S Commissioner of Education with Senate confirmation due in January. Derthick has headed Chattanooga schools since 1942 and previously Nashville and Clarksville posts.
Frank L. McKenzie of Dodge City files a Ford County district court suit seeking 125 242 dollars in damages for personal injuries from a motor vehicle collision about 15 miles west of Dodge City on September 16 1955. Defendants Kenneth Griffin and Elmer O Riegel are named, Griffin driving and Riegel owner of the truck.
William Miller of 18 Lincoln Street was bound over to district court on a burglary charge tied to a Oct 5 break in at the Piza Case. Under a $1000 bond he later posted and was released. He is among five youths facing related burglaries with theft including beer, novelty gifts, and $25.
The Eisenhower administration tentatively seeks a little over four billion dollars in foreign aid for the next fiscal year, boosting total U S assistance to more than fifty billion since the Marshall Plan began in 1948. The program covers the year starting July 1 with final approval pending budget message details.

A New York to Caracas airliner crashed near Caracas with 18 passengers and 7 crew aboard, all killed. The dead include 10 Americans among them 26 year old Charles Peete, a former batting champion. survivors none. The crash occurred in fog and rain over the Boca Chica mountains near Maiquetia. This followed a previous Linea Areapostal Venezolana disaster last June.
About 90 people attended the eighth annual Farm and Business Tax Institute at Memorial Building closing this afternoon. Attendees from 18 counties included bankers lawyers and accountants who prepare income tax returns. The Kansas State College Extension Service led the program with IRS Topeka and Social Security Administration officials and local organizers arranged the event.
About 50 boys stormed the Delta Gamma sorority house in Austin early today. Some girls fled while others fought back with baseball bats, causing little damage. Police arrived as the intruders fled after raiding two other houses and were halted before reaching Grace Hall.
A layer of cold Arctic air was moving south across Kansas with temperatures around freezing and a few snow flurries expected. Greenwich police and county coroner ruled Tommy Dorsey died accidentally from choking on food particles after illness. Investigators rejected a publicly released note as authentic and said Dorsey wrote a different note to his wife. Mrs Dorsey, his third wife, sought temporary alimony in Bridgeport court.
In Dumas Texas two University of Wichita students Marporie Ann Cloninger 19 Amarillo and Mary Catherine McLanahan 19 Wichita were killed when their car collided with a truck twelve miles from Dumas. Two other girls in the car were seriously injured. the truck driver escaped unharmed.
Joe Valdez hurried to assist a customer at a Dallas service station. The man claimed he paid nothing as the pump showed four dollars and fifty cents in gasoline dispensed, leaving Valdez puzzled by the missing payment.
