Hollywood actor Jay Robinson sits alone in his vacant mansion on Thanksgiving Day. Once earning 3000 dollars weekly with hit roles in The Robe and Demetrius, he now faces narcotics case appeal, lost work, and mounting debts as he sells furniture to keep the house.
AP dispatch reports a calm start to the Kansas holiday weekend with no traffic deaths so far each highway listed in good condition. One new fatality, Danny Kuckelman, 19, of Baileysville, occurred from an early Wednesday Lawrence area crash.
Hillside Development Co has been incorporated with authorized capital of 50 000 announced by secretary John N Sherman Jr. Other officers are Fred W Montague Jr president Wilbur Thompson vice president and Paul Brennecke treasurer. The project covers Hillside Acres east of the Chanute Country Club and west of town with 26 lots laid out.
Marked by Max Conrad 56, the pilot lands in El Paso after a 6,911 mile non stop flight from Casa Blanca in a Piper Comanche under 3,900 pounds. He then flies to San Francisco, after breaking a 7,668 mile heavier aircraft record last year.
Three separate district court suits, each for 40 000, name Victor J. Miller of Galesburg as defendant over a May 17 car wreck in front of Galesburg High School. Plaintiffs include Bertha Thurman and Arthur Thurman for his minor daughter Charlotte, all from Galesburg. The crash involved a Miller car and a Thurman pickup, injuring four. Miller also faces sheriff charges of driving while intoxicated reckless driving and using a fictitious name on his license. Lawyers for the plaintiffs are Columbia Markham and Smith of Parsons.
The Craw-Kan Telephone Assn. of Girard received federal approval for a $445,000 REA loan to build a new dial central office at Savonburg as part of an improvement plan. The project will upgrade service for 473 subscribers and bring initial telephone service to 205. Lawrence Thorp serves as association president.
A sea and air search is under way for a Navy jet with four men aboard that plunged into the Pacific about 900 miles east of Wake Island. The pilot radioed he was low on fuel and the crew bailed out within 15 minutes. The plane departed Whidbey Island, Washington, three days earlier from Barbers Point Naval Air Station Hawaii en route to Japan.
Two Lafayette youths Dennis Lee Bogan eighteen and Mike Joe Crank seventeen were jailed in Cherokee County for investigation of attempted car theft. They were arrested in Galena after driving away in Billy Barnes's car and said other boys helped them. Oklahoma authorities took four more Indiana youths in Tulsa as suspected companions.
Janet Hall, 14, arrived from Exmouth England to spend Thanksgiving with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hall and brother Michael in Wellsville Kas. The family plans to stay together in the United States after years apart.
In Fort Worth Texas a 14 year old boy Terry Lee Hanks was buried four feet under earth for 25 minutes after a hole caved in while he played. His 9 year old brother Jerry alerted rescuers and Everett Leroy Cook the stepfather dug for 20 minutes with family help. Terry was saved and released from hospital after treatment for bruises.
Sen. Harry F Byrd reports that federal employees totaled 2,348,807 in October, up 3,448 from September. Civilian jobs in the military services fell by 4,036, while civilian agencies added 7,484, per the Byrd committee's monthly reduction of nonessential spending report.
The Associated Press reports a four day Thanksgiving period with 433 traffic deaths, 49 fires, and 100 miscellaneous fatalities totaling 582. Weather and home gatherings may have driven the high toll compared with last year’s counts.
A massive snowstorm swept the East delivering up to 8 inches in New York State with 82 inches in Boonville, and 3 to 4 inches in Syracuse Utica and Rome. The Adirondacks saw the heaviest fall while Vermont reported three inches. Farther south rain fell and cold air plunged to subzero readings in multiple states.
President Eisenhower will broadcast Christmas greetings on December 23 at 4 30 p m EST after lighting the White House Christmas tree. The 70 foot silver spruce tree is a gift from Maine and will launch the Pageant of Peace on the White House lawn.
James Jesse Silliman a 75 year old nursing home resident was struck and killed on Route 54 near Bowling Green. Police said the driver David Stewart Dean 29 reported the man walked into the car’s path. Silliman had left the nursing home earlier and had Kansas relatives.
In West Berlin King Hussein of Jordan warned that Iraq could be taken over by Communist forces at any moment. He said the development would prevent Jordan from relaxing and expressed hope it would not happen, telling a reporter during a City Hall reception attended by Mayor Willy Brandt.
In East Providence Rhode Island two men seized a 500 pound safe containing the day's receipts from Dinty Moore's diner during a Thanksgiving holiday closure. Night manager Joseph Chandley witnessed the theft as the men fled with the heavy safe.
Independent gas stations cut prices by two cents starting Nov. 17, with major stations matching the move. Regular gasoline at independents now 27.9 to 30.9 cents, majors one cent above. A spokesman forecasts further drops toward 20 cents before stability returns, with another cent cut planned for 3 p.m. today.
Peter Gluckmann of San Francisco holder of the small plane solo round-the-world record lands in Honolulu after a 20 hour 39 minute sea-flight leg from California. He took off from Oak Harbor with a ham and cheese sandwich and coffee for a 2400 mile leg expected to take 22 to 24 hours. He delivers the plane to a Hawaii dealer.
Wholesale No 2 home heating oil prices set to rise half a cent per gallon in the mid continent. In Tulsa the wholesale price will be 92 cents a gallon as DX Sunray Oil Co confirms the Tuesday increase. Severe cold and stock drain drive the move, described as routine for the season.
MCPHERSON AP Mrs. O. H. Smith 81 died after Thanksgiving Day burns from clothing catching fire while cooking. She suffered second and third degree burns from shoulders to knees. Her husband beat out the flames, removed burning clothing, and neighbors took her to the hospital. The couple had no children.
NASA plans a Thor-Able mission in about two weeks to loft a payload toward Venus and into solar orbit after the Atlas-Able failed near Thanksgiving. Officials investigate a fiery fragment from the third stage while the Soviets widen their lead in the space race.
Chanute police reported two accidents over the holiday period. Rudolph Brixey 58 of Lola was arrested on driving while intoxicated and reckless driving after a two car crash at Santa Fe and Ash. Birner John A 216 W 4th sustained damage to his vehicle in the collision. Minor damage occurred in a second accident on West Main when Mrs Frank Young was rear ended by Steve Griffiths.
AP reports two 19 year old students from Daito Cultural University were arrested in Tokyo over the fatal beating of Dr. Charles F. Perry 51 an American teacher at St. Pauls University. Perry died of brain hemorrhage after being attacked for scolding rock-throwing on campus. No charges filed yet.
The Public Health Service issues its strongest warning yet linking smoking to higher lung cancer risk. Surgeon General Leroy Burney cites new evidence and urges cessation, while noting air pollution also contributes to rising cases.
AP reports the holiday weekend in Kansas will bring fair skies and a warming trend after a blustery Thanksgiving. Temperatures remain below freezing in eastern parts with highs near 40 in the west and 30s elsewhere. lows hover around the low 20s.

A U.S. consulate clerk Sgt. Robert Armstrong was seized outside the Chinese consulate in Bombay and held for five hours in a garage, bound and beaten before a passerby found him. The incident was described by a U.S. consul spokesman.
