Santa arrived this morning in Chanute in front of the Memorial Building to greet about 150 children. Firefighters assisted in handing out candy and bubble gum as lights were set to be turned on this evening. Wayne Taylor of the Chamber of Commerce said Santa would visit downtown again before Christmas.
With 12 working days left the United Nations Assembly pressed to resolve deadlocks over four Security Council seats and 18 member bids. France rejoined after boycotting over Algeria while the United States eased opposition to Mongolia’s membership as talks continued on disarmament and colonial issues in Morocco and West New Guinea.
Federal and local officers raided the Esquire Club describing it as a center of organized gambling. Dan Dwyer said agents took incoming calls from gamblers and that bets up to 125 dollars were placed on today's Army Navy game. Fred D Clemons and Raymond J McCombs were placed under technical arrest.
Marvin Meade, federal consultant at the University of Kansas research center, will discuss city zoning and planning at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Attendees should reserve seats at the chamber office by 10 a.m. Monday.

Byrd estimates about 35 bases may be set up in Antarctica to gather data for what could be the world’s greatest weather factory. Several nations plan expeditions this year.
Ellsworth Kansas saw a Lake Superior lumber yard destroyed by fire today with unknown cause. Two sheds across an alley from the yard were burned as well. Nearby homes were saved, with firefighting aid from Smoky Hill Air Force Base Salina and surrounding towns.
Kansas Highway Patrol examiner Jesse M. Gragg in Iola describes testing drivers across six counties including Neosho. Since 1948 he has overseen about 20 000 tests with accidents but no serious injuries, recalling a Wichita incident where a midget car applicant failed after near collision. He has tested about 4 000 Neosho County applicants and covers Greenwood Alslon Wilson Woodson and Bourbon Counties amid a rush for 1956 permits and birth date rule changes.
Dean Calvin, a 30 year old Leon farmer and oil field worker, was sentenced to 21 years in the State Penitentiary after pleading guilty to stealing four bulls, three heifers and two cows. District Judge W N Calkins ordered consecutive terms of up to seven years on each of three charges, with parole denied.
President Eisenhower is expected to watch the Army Navy game on television from Gettysburg, Pa. His travel restricted by a heart attack limits weekend activities and he did not attend the Philadelphia service classic. He plans to meet with Republican chairman Leonard W. Hale Monday and likely returns headquarters to Washington after December 18, with Christmas at the White House planned.

James W. McWherter and Jason McWherter of Toronto pleaded guilty in city court to reckless driving and leaving the scene. Police said they were arrested at Yates Center by Woodson County officials after a Thursday hit run that damaged a parked car owned by Max LaRue. Each man received a $25 fine for reckless driving, 30 days in jail with suspended sentences, and $15 for leaving the scene before being returned to Woodson County for further hearings.
The Rev. Santa Claus, an elderly retired minister, broke his left leg in three places when a stair board collapsed at his home. He is resting in a Marshall hospital with a leg cast and still expects to read the hundreds of letters he receives before Christmas. A vending machine was later found broken into at the Kay Hotel lobby with coins and merchandise missing.
An 18 year old airman from Grandview base admitted in a written statement shooting William Allen Hill during a dispute over a car payment. Cass County prosecutors say charges will be filed against Richard Harrell of Danville Iowa.
Thayer plans a new grade school to serve fifth through eighth grades now housed in the Methodist church and American Legion hall. A monolithic concrete building with a clinic and activity room is to be built by George Senne & Co. along with Brune Plumbing & Heating and Brown Electric as subcontractors. Architects are Williamson Loebsack & Associates. estimated cost is 44000 dollars with a 50000 bond approved July 1. Land was purchased from Arch and Lloyd Baxter. Completion depends on weather.
TOPEKA—The Kansas State Board of Health announced a plan to include about 200,000 children aged 1 to 4 in the Salk polio vaccine program, starting when vaccine becomes available. The first shot remains one cubic centimeter, the second shot reduced to .2 cubic centimeter given within the skin, with no third shots planned.
A sailor died instantly when a vehicle struck a bridge abutment near Cullison Kansas. Hutchinson Naval Air Station officials withheld the name pending next of kin notice. He was believed en route from Corpus Christi Texas to Burbank California.

The Liberian freighter Kismet was rescued off Cape Breton Island after running aground amid 30 to 45 mph winds and heavy seas. A Canadian Navy helicopter hoisted 22 crew members from a boatswain's chair as two lifelines were strung from a 1,000-foot cliff. Veteran AP bureau chief for China Fred Hampson died in Riley Kansas at 53. He served in World War II Pacific theater and reported from the Guadalcanal to Manila campaigns after joining the service in 1943. He suffered bronchitis and asthma from years as a correspondent and died of bronchial pneumonia following a highway accident injuries.
