A strong cold wave moves in with subfreezing lows expected tonight. Temperatures plunge to 15 20 degrees and a Saturday high near 30. Winds ease overnight as skies clear to partly cloudy, with statewide reports of 25 35 for Saturday and scattered early highs today in the upper 20s to 40s.
City Manager R J Hayes says Chanute and Coffeyville study a wheeling contract with Kansas Gas and Electric to exchange power via KG&E lines. Estimated costs include 7500 kw minimum 30 000 annually plus 75 000 to 100 000 for a substation. line construction could reach 1 million. The plan aims to share firm capacity and defer large plant expansions.
At 12 10 p m firefighters dispatched a truck to Martin Johnson airport to standby for a twin engine Aero Commander losing oil on approach 15 miles out. The Chanute bound plane, owned by Alexander Construction Co of Chicago, landed without incident with pilot Gene Carlson on board.
In Wichita a Leoti Kansas boy Clyde Swanson aged eight died at a city hospital Thursday from injuries suffered in a car truck collision near Leoti on Monday. His father Ernest Swanson, also injured, remained hospitalized at Leoti.
In Walla Walla AP report, Mrs. Tom Gehr and Dr. Morton Tompkins were friendly political rivals. After Dr Tompkins prepared for surgery on Mrs Gehr, he found a taped map of the United States on her abdomen with the slogan All the way with LBJ.

Bitter cold and blizzard like conditions hit the Dakotas Iowa Minnesota and Nebraska with near zero readings and gusts up to 70 mph. Snow totals reached seven inches in parts of Minnesota while visibility dropped to zero in the Albert Lee and Austin areas. Hazardous driving widespread as gale and cold wave warnings continued from the Dakotas to the Great Lakes and beyond.
A bank customer at a drive in window dropped a $2,000 check blown away by a gust. In hot pursuit, officers and bystanders chased the check as E. E. Shaddix, a policeman, tackled it to recover the wind driven document.
A 1925 Chanute Fire Department Sea grave 750-gallon rear pumper hose truck has been sold to Pi Kappa Alpha members at Tulsa University for 250 dollars. The truck, retired in 1950, will be refurbished and used in TU campus activities, marking a second life for the old white fire engine.
Belgian paratroopers prepared to intervene if needed to save whites held as hostages in rebel-held Stanleyville. A foreign affairs ministry statement said a battalion was awaiting orders on Ascension Island off Africa’s west coast.

United Nations Secretary General U Thant urged faster disarmament progress in 1965 and proposed talks among nuclear powers including Communist China to curb the arms race. He spoke in an introduction to the annual world state report for the General Assembly, noting UN finances and a looming cash crunch. He cited a $113.5 million deficit, $112.3 million in Congo and Middle East peacekeeping arrears, and only $24.8 million cash on hand, warning resources could run dry in six months without a solution. He did not comment on U.S. stance over voting rights given arrears from Soviet bloc and France.
Detroit AP reports Ford Motor Co will halt all auto production tonight because of local plant strike tie ups. About 80,000 workers will be affected, roughly half of Ford hourly staff. Some parts production will continue briefly as top level negotiations were postponed to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Washington AP Secretary of Defense Robert S McNamara declares his decision to close 95 obsolete bases and plants as absolutely unequivocally irrevocable. The move targets surplus facilities amid defense restructuring and budget tightening.
Salina Kansas officials voiced shock over the planned 1965 closing of Schilling AFB part of Secretary McNamara’s base-cutting plan. The city says the payroll totals about 20 million yearly and that 25 percent of its public school population includes Air Force families. Local leaders vow to reorganize economic activity, pursuing new prospects to blunt the impact.
Carlson joins Pearson and Dole in Salina to press President Johnson for a review of Schilling Air Force Base status with the aim of possibly rescinding its June 30 closure. The group says facts must be determined before any action, as Dole and Pearson coordinate from Washington and by phone.
In Humboldt Kansas newlyweds Sandy and Garry Daniels began their honeymoon with a parade out of the Humboldt Lutheran Church. A sudden brake caused a four car pileup with minor damage and no injuries. Returning home the bride struck her father's pickup, causing a deep gouge.
Rep. William H. Avery, governor elect, will confer with Defense officials in about two weeks after Thanksgiving on possible future use of Schilling Air Force Base Salina and Forbes Air Force Base Topeka. The Defense Department announced closures affecting 725 military personnel and 22 civilian workers at Forbes. Avery said he would seek a conference in Washington on disposal plans if no future program emerges.
Beech Aircraft Corp. reports a 70 per cent rise in earnings after taxes for 1964 over 1963. President Mrs. D. A. Beech called the year excellent for sales, earnings, and future production and marketing plans. Net earnings after taxes totaled 3,417,483, up from 1,904,498 in 1963, with earnings per share at 1.21.
