Salinas AFB to Close by July 1965 under plan
Washington reports that Schilling AFB Salina Kansas and Atlas missile installations at Schilling and Forbes AFB Topeka Kansas will be closed in coming months saving about 16.4 million. Schilling will shut KC135 refueling by June 30 1965 with B47 and Atlas end by March 1965. Forbes Atlas site slated for closure saving 6.9 million. Forbes AFB to remain active with 864 officers 4898 airmen and 400 civilians. Built in WWII to train B17 crews the base later supported B29 atom bomber crews and Korean War training. It was renamed Schilling in 1957 for Col. David C Schilling.
