Perth AP reports workers demonstrating a bushman whiplash to kill a brown snake. Robert Widdup, 18, tried the method on a four foot dead snake. the snake's head flew off and struck him in the forehead. He spent a night in hospital under observation.
The Kansas Official Council approved a 1969 70 platform urging grass roots welfare ideas via 12 county commissioners. It backs inventory based livestock assessment, study for fair livestock feedlot taxation, bond and rate adjustments, cigarette tax rise to ten cents, and nominal fees for registering mobile homes and trailers.
Olathe voters defeated an 18 million dollar civic center bond by about three to one, with 2,242 voting against and 698 for. A 280 thousand dollar pool renovation and new facility bond also failed 1,562 to 1,316.
The Pentagon estimates about 1 million dollars were spent to move 9 000 soldiers and Marines to Washington for seven days of antiwar demonstrations. Costs cover transport and supply but exclude military pay. Advance units arrived a week earlier and the last units departed overnight.
Secretary of State William P. Rogers told CBS the U S may upgrade relations with China though there is no clear sign Peking will respond to new initiatives. He noted China was not reacting negatively and that the Nixon administration hopes to boost communications and trade.
Rep. James G. O'Hara urged President Nixon to fire Herbert G. Klein and Dean Burch for alleged assaults on free press guarantees. The push followed Burch's questioning by a House subcommittee about calls to networks for transcripts of commentators' reaction to Nixon's November Vietnam policy speech.
About 700 residents at the Cherokee County Taxpayers Association meeting backed a state resolution to withhold taxes until developments. John Blythe of the Kansas Farm Bureau urged shifting school financing from property tax to income tax. He cited property tax revenue rising from 88 million in 1930 to about 465 million today.
The City Commission approved a 180000 beautification plan in Hutchinson Kansas for the downtown shopping area. Mid block crossings trees benches new sidewalks and other improvements are included. Property owners will pay 115000 in special assessments with the rest from general taxes and parking meter revenues.

The Topeka AP forecast calls for warmer weather across Kansas with west to northwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Highs around 50 in western areas and in the 40s elsewhere, lows in the 20s tonight, and Thursday highs in the 50s. Tuesday highs ranged from 34 at Goodland to 44 at Coffeyville. overnight lows from 17 at Garden City to 25 at Wichita and Salina.

Cha nute Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors a turkey give away across 31 participating stores from Thursday to Saturday. George McCune, chamber manager, explains that stores display paper cut-out turkeys and random calls during shopping hours award a free turkey to the store employee nearest the cut-out when called. Each store offers one or more turkeys.
More than 40 attended a Neosho Memorial Hospital Foundation dinner at the Tioga Hotel to discuss on the job training. Hospital officials urged top priority for staff development while regional programs offered help and HEW funded offices explained their role.
