Police Chief Tom Morehead urges planning for Safe Driving Day on Dec 1. He recalls last year’s first national observance when Chanute and Fort Scott competed to post the best no accident record. Fort Scott won honors after two Chanute drivers crashed. Morehead stresses cooperation to do better this year.
Kansas colleges have borrowed 1.98 million dollars from the U S government to fund dormitory style housing for students and staff. The Housing and Home Finance Agency notes loans will rise as Congress liberalized the program to include dining halls student centers and health facilities and cut rates to 2.5 percent with up to 50 year terms. President Eisenhower criticized the low rate but endorsed the program’s broad provisions. Kansas State College received 1 million for housing for 428 men while Municipal University of Wichita got 741 thousand for 134 men and 123 women and Ottawa University 240 thousand for 100 men.
Deputy Wesley G. Wolden 41 of Wyandotte County was killed when a patrol car collided with a produce truck on State Highway 32 near Muncie at 4 40 am. Deputy Duane Fanning 23 injured. truck driver Leonard D Myers detained for flare omission. Hutson injured and hospitalized. Myers charged as aiding in accident scene.
An arctic rescue crew from the 42nd Air Rescue Squadron faces two more days to reach the Air Force C54 wreck on Charleston Peak Nevada. Fourteen people aboard were lost with five air force personnel five civilian employees two engineers and two consultants among the dead. Rescue efforts began after the C54 crash near 11 500 feet elevation while en route from Norton AFB to the Nevada atomic range.
Soviet Premier Nikolai Bulganin and Communist Party chief Nikita Khrushchev toured New Delhi during their 18 day state visit. They paid tribute at the Gandhi Memorial by placing floral wreaths and removing shoes. They also toured historic sites including Jama Masjid and the red sandstone fort, escorted by modest crowds as Nehru did not accompany them.
Intelligence sources report Red Army divisions in the Soviet zone reduced from about 10 000 to 7000 men. Twenty two divisions are streamlined into small mobile groups aimed at surviving atom bomb areas.
Washington reports the Pentagon has ruled out a rigid policy of maximum dispersal for defense plants. A Defense Department directive says dispersal will be a prime factor in siting new plants, but allows minor additions to existing facilities rather than large relocations.
Mrs Evelyn Berger hid jewelry valued at 2000 pounds in a waste basket before a weekend trip. The maid was not informed and now workers at the neighborhood incinerator search trash as it is fed into the furnace.
Kansas State College will renew its request for 450000 to build a new student hospital next session. The board authorized President James A. McCain to make the request, citing Health Department concerns over the present facility built from World War II barracks. The college has about 100000 in a student health fee fund for this purpose.
Senator Jackson predicts the Navy will ask Congress to authorize nine additional atomic powered submarines. He cites the Nautilus and Sea Wolf as precedents and notes two subs already built, two under construction, and four more authorized. He did not disclose details behind the forecast.
The Kansas Public Health Service allocated 1,741,485 cubic centimeters of Salk polio vaccine to states and territories. Kansas received 20,427 shots and Missouri 39,741 as part of the distribution.
Investigators in Seattle begin piecing together a deadly Penssil Air Transport DC4 crash two miles south of Boeing Field. Twenty seven died in the fiery wreck in a suburban backyard. Forty seven survived, including a woman and three children. Civil Aeronautics Board eyes survivor testimony to solve the mystery while tail surface of the plane remains as the sole large piece.
The Conference on Asian Affairs will hold its 5th annual meeting at the University of Oklahoma next October. Alfred Crofts of the University of Denver was elected president at last night’s meetings at Kansas State College. George Beckmann of the University of Kansas was elected vice president and Howard Levy of the University of Colorado, secretary treasurer.
Sen Estes Kefauver charged the Democratic National Committee favored Adlai Stevenson at a Chicago news conference during the three day party leaders meeting. Paul Butler denied the claim as Kefauver assailed national committee support while Stevenson prepared for a $100 dinner with Harriman Truman said he has no favorite yet and would decide after the convention. More than 2,500 reservations were reported for the dinner ending the rally.
An explosion demolished the Sigma Chi fraternity house at Butler University in Indianapolis causing minor injuries to seven people. The three story brick building valued at 155000 was a total loss after a 1000 gallon hot water tank exploded. Eleven members and the house mother were inside. more than 20 students live there.
In Los Angeles the CIO UAW Aircraft department outlines goals for bargaining next year including a guaranteed employment plan substantial wage increases and a full union shop as core objectives.
President Eisenhower and Secretary Dulles closed the Geneva conference failure and outlined a renewed push for a just and durable peace. Dulles, in a TV radio briefing, said the Geneva spirit remains though Soviet diplomacy cooled, and they ruled out drastic defense cuts or further talks for now. The White House vows no setback or obstacle will deter the U. S. pursuit of peace.
President Eisenhower relaxes at his Gettysburg farm with old friends as snow covers the Eisenhower lands. He may skip the outdoor golf putting green with NATO leader Gruenther visiting for Western European defense talks. A bridge game resumes with neighbor George Allen and Dr. Snyder present as the storm confines activities indoors.
Knox Erie was elected chairman of the executive board of the Neosho County Agricultural Extension Council at the annual meeting. Mrs. Henry Watkins Erie was named secretary and Virgil Hines Erie treasurer. Directors include Marion Showalter Erie district, Mrs. Leon Carroll St. Paul, Ed Bussman Chanute, William G. Bodley Chanute, Mrs. George Fischer Erie, and Fred Malson Chanute.

The Rev Charles Barr of the First Baptist church will give the sermon the Rev A W Swansen of the Christian church the call to worship Scripture will be read by the Rev Clint Mitchell pastor of the Nazarene church and the Rev J M Torrence of the Federated church will give the invocation and benediction Music will be by the combined choirs under the direction of Mrs Louie Rogers Organists will be Mrs Harold Heaton and Mrs Marjorie Howard.
Two non injury motor car accidents were investigated last night. John E. Kuffler of 1702 8 Santa Fe collided with a Santa Fe switch engine at West 14th railroad crossing. L. A. Stout, engineer, was aboard the locomotive. Richard E. Johnson of 420 8 Lincoln left the Bunker Hill curve on Highway K39 west of Chanute and rolled over after a rear bump from another vehicle. Johnson said the other driver fled the scene.
The Arkansas City Daily Traveler will publish a Sunday morning edition starting tomorrow, replacing the Saturday evening issue. Rex Woods Jr. remains editor and manager as the paper shifts to six weekday evening editions plus a Sunday morning edition, with readers urged to call 17 about Tribune delivery.
Forecast calls for warmer conditions through Sunday with clear skies in Kansas. Tonight’s low around 25 to 35 degrees, highs Sunday near 60s, with traces of rain or snow reported in Wichita Chanute Emporia Topeka and Olathe earlier.
Benedict Steve A. Parsons, 67, of Benedict, was found dead from a gunshot on his porch. A pistol lay nearby. Dr. E. A. Rindt noted ill health. A son died in 1933. Survivors include Nellie, his wife, two daughters Mrs. Carl Collins and Mrs. Albert Slinkard, and five sons Dave, Harry, Jim, Earl, and Ray.
Mrs. Ivy Baker Priest treasurer of the United States predicts a woman will be vice president by 2000 and three women will sit on the Supreme Court. She also foresees half of Congress as female by the turn of the century during a speech to the American Institute of Laundering auxiliary in Philadelphia.
Wilt Chamberlain scored 42 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead Kansas freshmen to an 81-71 win over the Jayhawks varsity before 14 000 at Allen Fieldhouse. Coach Forrest C Allen praised him as the greatest player alive while noting Chamberlain still has adjustments to make. Jerry Johnson of Chanute added seven points in limited time.
A premature twin born to Mr. and Mrs. William Edward Moore died before a hospital incubator from Butler, Missouri, could arrive in Fort Scott Kansas. The surviving twin, weighing 28 ounces, was placed in the incubator after Alan Hensler and Ray Kuchel rushed it from Butler with police escorts.
