About 400 people attended the Neosho County 4-H club achievement dinner in Erie Saturday night. Awards for 1957 were announced in 34 categories. Keith Wright reported on the event and the winners.

Winter storm halts travel as tornadoes kill in South

A wintry storm swept the Midwest from northern Oklahoma to Wisconsin with heavy snow and blowing winds. Tornadoes Sunday killed five in Alabama and Mississippi, with more forecast. Nebraska and Iowa reported up to 10 inches of snow and many schools closed.

Radiologist’s Lost Bird Dog Saddens Boy in St. Joseph

Dr Joseph L Fisher and Dr Robert Bristow hunted near Chanute returning to St Joseph with two bird dogs left in a car. One dog named Pat disappeared from an unlocked vehicle while the five year old son Bill Fisher cried in worry. They said they had bagged birds on Saturday and Sunday.

Miss Carder Bruised In Traffic Collision

Beulah Bell Carder, 16, suffered neck and back bruises after a two car collision at Lincoln and Walnut at 11 30 a m Saturday. She rode with Ray Carder 15 W 4th in a car struck by a truck driven by Teddy Boydston Neosho Mo. The southbound car and the eastbound truck sustained damage to their right side and front bumper respectively.

Young GOP Elects District Leaders in Parsons

William K. Ong of Labette County was elected chairman of the 3rd District Young Republicans at a Parsons meeting. He succeeds Richard Scovel of Independence. Russell Mairs of Altamont was named vice chairman and Mrs. Ernest Harms of Thayer secretary treasurer.

Kansas River Needs Eight Small Reservoirs

Col. L. E. Laurion of the Kansas City district Army engineers said studies of the 1951 flood indicate a need for eight small reservoirs in the Kansas River Basin. The dams, tentatively estimated at 110 million dollars, would supplement existing works including the Turtle Creek dam.

Cold Nights Force Python to Return Home

Aziz the 21 foot python fled an alligator farm cage on Friday. After two days in 40 degree desert nights he slithered back to his home and poked his nose through the fence. Keeper Jack Adams said the snake caught a chill but should recover.

Navy eyes earlier launch for small satellite and 20 inch satellite

The Navy said it aims to launch a six inch satellite next month and then attempt a fully instrumented twenty inch satellite before the original March target date.

Parsons Butler Hints Benson Ouster at 3rd District Dinner

National Democratic chair Paul Butler predicted Secretary Benson would be removed soon criticizing his leadership as a liability to Republicans. He spoke at a 3rd District fund raiser in Parsons attended by about 400 as Gov. Docking and others urged bipartisanship to counter Soviet gains. Butler called for accountability toward the President amid agricultural woes amid a world disarmament context.

Snow Covers Kansas As Big Storm Dumps Snow

The region faced a major snowstorm with up to 10 inches in parts of Kansas and heavy accumulations in neighboring states. Gusty winds caused drifting, highways were mostly passable but slick in spots, and scattered rain turned to snow as a colder trend neared.

Jets set 10 600 mile nonstop flight record to Buenos Aires

The Strategic Air Command logged a 10 600 mile nonstop flight of six B52 jet bombers from Homestead Air Force Base Florida to Buenos Aires and back. The mission covered about 24 hours with refueling en route by KC135 KC97 tankers. Brig Gen William K Martin reported perfect performance and noted the group could have continued.

Sooner Youth Dies in Crash Near Thayer

A 15-year-old Enid, Oklahoma youth Levi Hoskins Jr. died after a two car collision east of Thayer at 5 p.m. Saturday. Three others were injured Walter Gragert Judy Laffland and John Barney in hospital or released. Barney was uninjured. the crash collapsed one car onto the other and involved two county roads.

Ten Cadavers Found in Plainfield Man’s Home
