Plane Ruins Found All 28 Aboard Dead

LAS VEGAS AP reports wreckage of a Fairchild F27 from Phoenix bound to Las Vegas found near Arden 16 miles southwest of Las Vegas. All 28 aboard killed after hitting a mountain during a snowstorm. four helicopters searched in blizzard-like conditions as witnesses described the sighting and missing landing lights.

Moisture Situation Real Good in Area

Eastern and central Kansas received a soaking rain, totaling over 2 inches, with more expected. Runoff filled ponds and rivers, improving soil moisture for winter. Forecast calls for tonight showers and thunderstorms, cloudy Tuesday, cooler with highs in the 40s and lows near 40.

Car Accidents Reported In Area Collisions and Mishaps

Police report two vehicle crashes in the area. Charles Ritz 28 and Irma Gritz 61 were involved in a collision on Island Lincoln yesterday afternoon. Ritz’s 1961 Ford and Gritz’s 1955 Ford sustained $50 and $75 in damage respectively. Additional notes include a one car county road accident northeast of the city limits involving Jack Banta’s daughter, a 1964 Pontiac off US 169 near Neocha drive in theater, and a Chanute Motor Co. car left running in gear with the transmission in drive and unattended in a ditch.

Snowstorm blitz hits western area spares casualties

A late season blizzard slammed the Kingman area in northwest Arizona bringing four inch snowdrifts and two foot drifts along U S 66 and Route 93. Dozens of motorists, hunters and a fledgling flight crew were stranded but all missing people were later found safe. A Prescott teacher died in a separate crash near Prescott. The storm extended from Maine to California with rain in the east and drought conditions persisting in the South and East.

Hunter avoids deer in rain fatal collision near Knobwoster

George Andrew Loftus Jr of Raytown Mo spent three deer hunting days near Warsaw Mo. On US 50 a doe crossed suddenly and he swerved, hitting a 200 pound, 8 point buck. The rainstorm spun his car, causing about 300 dollars damage. He kept the deer as no deer tag was used.

Man Held as Search For Girl Continues

In Topeka, officers and airmen joined a sweeping search of muddy fields for Gladys, a 10 year old girl reported kidnapped Saturday morning. About 150 to 175 officers, including Shawnee County deputies and Forbes Air Force Base airmen, used a helicopter in the hunt four miles northwest of U.S. 24. William Zimmer, a Kansas City Kansas railroad worker, was arrested on a first degree kidnapping warrant as investigators questioned him about the case.

Tapir skull on display at Chanute gem show

The 6th annual Chanute Gem and Mineral club show featured a tapir skull loaned by Bob Fledge of Newton in excellent condition, dating about 150 thousand years. Exhibits included tumbling demonstrations by Mr and Mrs Harvey Stone, fluorescent rocks under black light, Indian artifacts fossils and jewelry, with about 400 attendees. Glen Ladd presides the club, C K Davis served as general chairman.

Christmas Seals Mailed To Aid Tuberculosis Fight

Annual appeal under way as 4,800 area residents will receive letters about TB and how Christmas Seals support the county chapter. County chairwoman Mrs. Bruce Burris notes the drive is the main fund-raiser and funds the X-ray unit touring Neosho county. Chanute will host the unit in June. High school students assembled the letters with Mrs. Merle Neer guiding. County chairs span Erie Galesburg Thayer St Paul and Stark with Chanute leader Mrs D A Finney and other officials handling treasury and health education. An estimated six percent rise in Kansas TB cases last year underscores the need for continued support.

Hearing On Water Here Today

A public hearing by the Kansas Water Resources Board on proposed water development legislation drew only a few attendees in southeast Kansas. W I Boone Eureka Fred Six Lawrence and executive secretary Dwight Metzler led the session, outlining a general long range plan with later specific projects. The hearing was the fourth in a six part series with final sessions set for Emporia and Hutchinson.
