Four county 4-H leaders from Neosho Allen Wilson and Woodson counties were honored at the annual Chanute Chamber of Commerce recognition dinner. George W Freeman praised 4-H as the finest youth organization and speakers noted the work depends on love of people. Nearly 200 attended including county extension agents and 4-H leaders. Floyd Potter presided with welcoming remarks by Chanute Mayor Dave Evans and Chamber President John Gorton.

Pheasant dispute ends with Cooper claiming the bird
In western Kansas near Montezuma two Chanute teens argued over a pheasant as it revived after being shot. David Cooper, 16, ultimately kept the bird he felled, part of a four hunter group that netted 16 pheasants. The report also notes a call to Mrs. Ned H. Allen winning a refrigerator in a national contest and a Christmas theme change for The Space Age Santa Claus at Kansas Citys Country Club Plaza.

Fire Destroys Farm Home Near Neodesha
A farm home on an 80 acre property owned by Mr and Mrs Ralph Busick was destroyed by fire Monday morning about 10 am three miles west of here. The house and all belongings except the clothes the family wore were burned. cash totaling 250 dollars was also lost. There was no insurance coverage and no one was home at the time. The Busicks’ daughter and neighbors reported to Neodesha where Busick works for Lorbeer Motors in the salvage department.

Second Big Brush Fire Near Los Angeles Controlled
The second major brush blaze in Southern California this week is nearly contained with only isolated hot spots. In Kagel Canyon winds fanned flames across 2,365 acres and damaged 10 structures, about 20 miles north of Los Angeles. Last week Bel-Air Brentwood and Topanga Canyon fires destroyed 465 homes and blackened 14,000 acres.

Parole Request Filed For Wilbur Chaney
State penitentiary at Lansing reports Wilbur Chaney of Chanute will apply for parole on December 28. Chaney pleaded guilty to second degree burglary in district court on November 22, 1960 and was sentenced to 5 to 10 years. He was arrested earlier this month for a Chanute Produce Co. break in and admitted involvement in other break ins locally.

Man Electrocuted Working Near Iuka
A 29 year old lineman from Pratt, Robert Cast eel, was electrocuted Tuesday while removing a high voltage line from a tree near Iuka. Another workman Roy Downum, also of Pratt, was treated for shock at a Pratt hospital.

No Robbery Attempt Found in Iola Injury Case
Iola man Joseph Calahan, 24, suffered a scalp injury in a private home with no robbery attempt alleged. He and a companion gave varying accounts, one placing the attack in a cafe, another in a Chanute home during an alleged whiskey purchase. Calahan was treated at Allen County Hospital and reported in satisfactory condition. No charges will be filed without a signed complaint.

Prisoner Released After Paying Damages
Louis Levi Franklin of Douglas Arizona was released from Chanute county jail after paying a $15 fine and $35 in damages to the city. He faced charges including disorderly conduct disturbing the peace destruction of property and resisting arrest. The damages covered the city jail.

Girl Returned Unharmed in Corvallis Abduction Case
Eight year old Marjorie Schubert was abducted by a motorist Tuesday afternoon and found unharmed near her home in Corvallis Oregon. Police had searched overnight and planned to question the girl about her kidnapper.

Injuries Reported In Highway Crash Near Here
Olin W. Morris age 45 of Parsons suffered minor injuries in a traffic accident on highway K39 about 2:55 p.m. yesterday three and a half miles east of here. His 1958 Mercury collided with a 1957 Chevrolet driven by Ed E. Brown age 60 of Erie. Brown was uninjured. Both cars were towed to a Chanute garage.

Open House Planned for Neosho Memorial Hospital Wings
The Board of Trustees announced an open house on December 8 to inspect the new obstetrics and patients wings of Neosho Memorial Hospital plus the administration wing completed last year. The obstetrics area adds two delivery rooms a doctors lounge labor room and a fathers waiting room. The new patients wing adds 22 beds and a nurses station. The administration wing houses a conference room medical records room pharmacy administrator’s office and a basement snack shop and classroom. Total costs were 210000 for the obstetrics and patients wings and 59000 for the administration wing financed by bonds. A tour exhibits and refreshments are planned at the snack shop.
