A 1st Infantry Division detachment repelled a 500 strong Viet Cong battalion 40 miles north of Saigon in a 12 hour battle. About 100 enemy killed, U.S. casualties light. Planes and artillery supported, 105mm howitzers and armor damaged on both sides.
In Alexander a Rush county collision killed 15 year old Attilea Wendier of Nekoma and 59 year old Henry W Bott of Alexander. Attilea's father Arthur Wender, 39, was seriously injured. In Larned a car hit two cows nine miles south of town killing driver Michael Debusk, 26, and his fiance Marge Bolte, 23, both of St. Louis. Debusk's parents were injured.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 75, hospitalized at Fort Gordon after chest pains at Augusta National Golf Club. Medical team revised diagnosis from heart insufficiency to angina and later to a true heart attack, yet he slept well, showed no further chest pains, and remained in excellent spirits.
Arctic air and gusty northerly winds spread from Montana into the Dakotas and lower Midwest. Two inches of snow covered Dickinson area as storm extended east of the Continental Divide. Temperatures fell to 3 in Havre 6 in Cut Bank and 12 in Helena with near zero visibility at night in Dickinson.
West German Foreign Minister Gerhard Schroeder arrived in Paris for two days of discussions with French officials on bilateral relations and European issues.
Toney Bresee 32 of Joplin formerly Chanute was arraigned in city court on a felony charge of obtaining money under false pretenses. Preliminary hearing set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Bresee remanded to jail on a $1500 bond. Also charged with two misdemeanor check violations, hearing continued. He was extradited from Missouri on the felony warrant accusing listing a car he did not own as security for a bank loan. Neosho county officers brought him to Erie from Carthage.

A fal automobile show featuring 1966 models from seven Lincoln Elm dealerships will be held tomorrow on the First National Bank parking lot. The First National Bank and the dealers cooperate to present the event and will provide refreshments.
Senator Ferdinand E. Marcos surged ahead in unofficial returns to clinch the presidency as the Nacionalista candidate gained about 100000 votes in a few hours. Incumbent Diosdado Macapagal trailed with an 80 percent counted vote and could not close the gap. Mindanao showed slight relative strength for Macapagal but not enough to matter.
The United States ordered a comprehensive embargo on all arms shipments to Rhodesia and barred sugar imports for 1966. President Johnson supported Britain's stance at a U N Security Council session led by Ambassador Arthur J. Goldberg. Britain had ruled out force to punish Ian Smith's government.
A United Airlines Boeing 727 crash landed at Salt Lake City airport burning 40 passengers to death and leaving 43 survivors hospitalized. The nose gear or main landing gear failure was blamed. investigators arrived as the Civil Aeronautics Board probes the cause.
Duane E. Pope earned a C in a criminology course at McPherson College in Kansas last year but did not engage in lively class discussions. Prosecutors say Pope, 22, killed three people and wounded a fourth during a Big Springs bank robbery in June. Defense witnesses described Pope as restrained in class and defense experts noted possible insanity. Also testifying was Leonard Lowe, who sold Pope a $10,000 life policy in December 1963. Judge suggested the trial might end by Thanksgiving.
Ben Desselle 1407 Malcoln has been appointed dump boss at the city dump ground. City Manager R J Hayes said today Desselle will supervise the ground in exchange for exclusive salvage rights.

A 1965 Dodge Dart driven by Steven L. Crumrine 16 of 718 S Lafayette suffered 1500 in damage in a one car crash southeast of town around 6 PM yesterday. Crumrine and a passenger were not injured. Location given as eight tenths mile east and four tenths mile south of the 21st street junction with the Austin road.

The Pentagon reports Viet Nam war battle deaths surpassed 1 000 this week with a total of 1 000 since the first casualty on December 22, 1961. A weekly tally shows 987 combat deaths through last Monday, and Tuesday's new deaths await names.
