The Labor Department said the national unemployment rate climbed 0.3 percent in October to 8.6 percent, the highest in four months, as more Americans sought work. The number of unemployed rose by 230,000 to 8 million, while total employment held at about 85.4 million.
Senate health subcommittee hearings focus on CIA and Defense drug experiments on over 7,000 Americans across 25 years, including deaths. Witnesses include CIA Technology head Carl Duckett and Army surgeon general Gen. Kenneth Dirk. Separate data cite NSA operations and jobless/economic shifts with labor market changes and price spikes.
Donald Burgess, a former Chanute man and Voice of America staffer, may be en route from Beirut to Athens to join his wife and two children Kristen and Joshua. His family evacuated to Athens as hostilities worsened. Burgess plans to join them by midweek and then return to the United States by November. He has resigned from VOA and will write syndicated columns from Simi Valley, California.

Kansas Finance Council halted new pay regulations that would pay 22 times regular salary for holidays worked after a federal court injunction. The suspension, effective Nov. 18, covers holidays including Christmas Thanksgiving Veterans Day Memorial Day Independence Day and Labor Day with some agencies already reporting costs. Estimated annual impact ranged from 2 million to 5 million if fully in effect though timing and scope remain uncertain.
