A mob of teenagers stormed the entrance of the House Committee on un American Activities building in Chicago. Police rounded up 24 demonstrators after clashes. some were jailed or detained. Demonstrators sang We Shall Overcome while others inside were escorted out as witnesses remained silent.

Food clothing transportation and medical care lifted the CPI to 109.3 a new high. Food prices matched a September 1964 peak driven by fresh fruits and vegetables. Government data show weekly factory earnings fell about 1.25 due to less overtime while hourly pay held at 2.60. Purchasing power declined about 1.5 as prices rose. Officials say the April rise may reflect volatility in food and gasoline and should not alone signal a sustained inflationary trend.
