Senator Walter Mondale told St Olaf College graduates that a billion dollars could run St Olaf for 125 years or endow about six small colleges forever. He spoke at the Minnesota school as part of its commencement services in Northfield.
Four men from Lincoln Nebraska died when a small plane overshot a grass strip near Wilson Dam on the Saline River and crashed into a hill, clipping a fence and exploding in flames. Victims include Wesley L. Johns 40 pilot owner and three passengers Frank J. Uride 39 Thomas Gandara 40 and Robert Esquivel Jr 38 all of Lincoln.
Supreme Court Justice William C. Douglas said he knows little about the Albert Parvin Foundation tax problems and will not bend to pressure. The Los Angeles based Parvin Foundation announced his resignation as president and named Fred Warner Neal as successor.
City manager R. J. Hayes stated the agenda for tonight's 7:30 meeting in the Memorial Building commission room is not yet ready. Pending items include taxi insurance, Ard yn Heights fire lane paving, housing authority appointments, and curfew policy discussion with juvenile authorities.
The U S Command announced two new offensives in Vietnam aimed at forcing enemy forces from Tam Ky and the Khe Sanh area. Operation Samar Plain began May 16 near Da Nang, while Operation Herkimer Mountain started May 9 near the Lao Border. Casualties: 28 Americans killed and 134 wounded, 142 NVA and 26 paratroopers killed in Samar Plain, 29 NVA killed in Herkimer Mountain with 2 U S and 32 wounded. Helicopters lost total 2,678. Allied tallies show about 300 American, 413 South Vietnamese and 4,000 enemy casualties last week.
Topeka reports unusually warm sunny weather through Tuesday after five days of clouds. Eastern Kansas highs in the 80s, western parts near 90, with lows 50s to 60s and a chance of thunder showers later in the week. Overnight lows ranged from Beloit 57 to Pittsburg 63.
Traveling to the moon and back is becoming all in a days work for spacemen.
Apollo 10 astronauts Thomas P. Stafford John W. Young and Eugene A. Cernan returned to the Pacific aboard the USS Princeton after a near flawless eight day mission. They parachuted into the sea three miles from the recovery ship in a precise splashdown 400 miles east of Pago Pago. Television live coverage brought the moment to the U.S. and Europe as Navy divers secured flotation gear and hoisted the crew aboard for medical checks and celebrations aboard the Princeton.
In Iola Kansas two young children Shane Jeffers age two and Marjorie seven months died when a fire broke out in their south side home. Parents James and Mrs Jeffers escaped by climbing from a window to a ladder left by workers. Police note the blaze started in a downstairs room and the couple attempted to reach the children before flames blocked the stairs.
Principal Garry Church reports 29 seniors left Chanute High School before graduation, about 4.5 percent of 633 students. Counselor Don Tucker notes state figures are skewed by large city schools and aims to add a second counselor next fall.
