Fred Bishop of Rose found hundreds of honey bees inside his livestock truck cab after the Chanute Livestock Auction on E. 14th. A two hour battle followed with a fire and broom until the bees were driven away without anyone being stung.
Two minor daughters Verla Sue and Letha Faye Beeney of Erie are ordered returned to parents after June 5 from the state Atchison children's home. The district court acted on an appeal from a juvenile court truancy ruling and set June 22 for a further hearing with the children present.
Intense storms swept east central Kansas with high winds and giant hail. Burrton suffered extensive damage to stores, a trailer home, barns, and rail yard. vehicles and windows were wrecked. Injuries included a hand injury and several hospitalizations as tornadoes touched down nearby. Denton, Newton, Hutchinson reported multiple funnel clouds and widespread damage with millions in losses.
Washington AP reports approval of a $20,825 interest free loan to Humboldt Kansas residents for planning sewer improvements. The project, estimated at $400,000, includes building additional sewage treatment facilities and extending sewer lines. Local emergency services faced outages as debris blocked roads and a toppled antenna damaged a nursing home garage.
The Labor Department reports a 0.2 percent rise in consumer prices in April, pushing the 1962 inflation so far to 0.7 percent for the year. The index reaches 105.2 from 1957 59 averages, with gains in fruits and vegetables, used cars, gasoline, movie admissions, and medical care services, while poultry eggs milk fuel and furnishings fall. Weekly earnings for a four person family average 85.53, near the all time high.
Three Chanute youths Dallas Roses age 16 Bob Rice age 17 and Kenneth Ornelas 16 face grand larceny charges after two 6.4 inch pipe elevators stolen from a drilling rig east of Chanute were recovered southeast of town. Rice had prior petty larceny and burglary charges with a $25 fine. Preliminary hearing tentatively set in city court.
Burlington New Jersey AP reports David B Huffman credits bachelorhood for his long life as he nears his 101st birthday. He says avoiding marriage contributed to his longevity.
CAPE CANAVERAL Fla AP a vast manhunt followed Malcolm Scott Carpenter as he completed three orbits and re entered with a shallow angle. Officials say he may have been dangerously tired and confused during the last pass, with oxygen concerns suspected. The Aurora 7 capsule floated until a destroyer recovered it, and Carpenter faced medical questioning as planners weighed a possible more elaborate homecoming.
About 1,000 male students at Oklahoma State University rioted for four hours, ending early today. Thirty-two were arrested, 17 jailed overnight. a coed was cut by a bottle, two officers and a firefighter injured. Damages ran into thousands at two dorms as police used tear gas and 60 officers enforced the scene.
Florence Carpenter welcomed her son Malcolm Scott Carpenter back after his three orbits around Earth as relatives in Boulder Colorado rejoiced. In Cape Canaveral Rene Carpenter held a news conference with her four children describing her calm during the mission and plans for a reunion and trip to Colorado.
Charles H. Brooks 20 of Erie and Glen Dormois 50 of 204 N Grant were in a non injury crash on Main in front of Royster Junior High School at about 8 am. Brooks rear ended Dormois rear bumper damage estimated at 75 for the Brooks 1956 Chevrolet and 25 for the Dormois 1958 Mercury. Earlier Nettie M. Davis Parsons and Mrs Grant Bell Baxter Springs reported a minor accident in the city lot on North Grant with slight damage to Bell 1955 Dodge.
Gov. John Anderson urged Kansas motorists to participate in a Memorial Day safety drive by keeping headlights on during the holiday period. The program is sponsored by the Kansas Department of the American Legion, which will distribute safety literature and ask drivers to keep lights on as a safety reminder.

Chanute High School graduate Marilyn Mull won an $1,800 Soroptimist Fellowship to continue medical studies at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Mull, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Mull of 420 N Steuben, was selected as one of two from the South Central Region at the 36th Soroptimist conference in Dallas. She is a 1956 Chanute High and 1960 KU graduate now a medical student in Kansas City Kansas. The Shawnee Mission Soroptimist Club sponsored her fellowship.
Dismantling of The Humboldt Hotel, a local landmark, nears completion as workmen remove stone work. The block along New York Street between the highway and 8th Street is being modernized with a medical clinic, a new post office, and razing of several service stations for progress.
The Chamber of Commerce announces a six session community development seminar in Chanute starting June 4. The Center for Community Planning Services at Kansas State University will conduct with Donald D. White directing. Attendance limited to 35. six two hour meetings spread across June 4 through June 9 at Home Savings and Tioga Hotel.
Central Kansas faces more thunderstorms today and tonight with wind and rain. Highs near 90s through Saturday, with 65 to 70 tonight and 90 to 95 Saturday. Tornadoes battered areas overnight from Reno to Miami counties. worst storms centered around a triangle from Reno to Osage and Cloud counties.
