Senate probes Estes case questions exceed one thousand

Senate investigators disclosed they have questioned more than 1,000 people in the Billie Sol Estes case as hearings loom. Youth Admits Theft Of Pipe Elevators

A Chanute youth admitted in questioning by police and Sheriff Jerry Sloan to stealing two sets of 6 4 inch pipe elevators valued at about $40 per set. Another youth was implicated but not located. Elevators found in a ditch near Ronald Cheyney home 42 miles east of the VFW Lake south of town. The theft was said to stem from a drilling rig in the river bottom east of town.

Plane Crash Mystery Deepens in Iowa Farmland

Civil Aeronautics Board investigators reported locating a hostess seat from the Continental Airlines jet about 25 miles from the crash site. The plane with 45 aboard crashed north of Unionville on Tuesday night, with earlier finds extending up to 60 miles away. Investigators from federal agencies and the airline continued a wide search through wreckage for clues.

KCC Approves KG E Rate Hike In Wichita and State

The Kansas Corporation Commission approved a 418000 annual electric rate increase for Kansas Gas and Electric Co. in Wichita. The hike raises minimum charges from 75 to 100 cents in Wichita, 85 to 100 cents in other urban areas, and from 180 to 200 cents in rural regions.

Weather outlook from Topeka foresees showers and warmth

A warm front moves north over Kansas as the Weather Bureau forecasts showers and rising temperatures through Friday. South central Kansas may receive needed rain. southeast Kansas and the south central area are drier. Forecaster Richard Garrett notes rainfall amounts are hard to predict but prospects look brighter for some areas.

Wheat Control Victory in Senate on Farm Bill

The Senate backed tighter wheat production controls in a farm bill showdown. It rejected extending the current wheat allotment and price support for two more years, while preserving a new permanent planting and marketing restraint. The Agriculture Committee had favored both wheat provisions by a 9 to 8 margin.

Severe storm and tornado forecast for Kansas and Oklahoma

The Weather Bureau issued a severe thunderstorm and tornado forecast for southern Kansas and northern Oklahoma including the eastern Oklahoma Panhandle. Scattered severe storms with tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds were expected from noon to 6 pm CST along a zone from Garden City, Kansas to Chanute, Kansas and 60 miles on either side.

Fatal shotgun accident claims girl on Salina porch

In Salina a 1 1/2 year old girl Kemberlie DeAnn Thomas died and her sister Lori Machell age 2 1 4 was wounded by a 12 gauge shotgun blast. Douglas Lewis 42 explained he was playing with the gun when it discharged from a closet through a window. Police noted tampered shells and an open dresser drawer. The elder Thomas family were visiting the Lewis home when the incident occurred.

Welfare Board Interviews Prospect for State Director

The Board of Social Welfare interviewed a psychiatrist candidate from Ohio for the state director of institutional management post. No decision was reported, and the board did not identify the psychiatrist or disclose his current position. The candidate, Dr. Richard L. Meadows, was appointed to the $22,500 yearly post in January with a plan not to stay beyond one year.

Carpenter Happy for Rescue From Grueling Assignment

CAPE CANAVERAL Fla March 10 when it was disclosed that Malcolm Scott Carpenter was chosen as one of seven Mercury astronauts he faced a grueling two year tour on an aircraft carrier away from family and a nonflying job. Carpenter recalled the moment and spoke of his navigation and communications work for the Mercury capsule. He said he would ride the nose cone of an Atlas three times around the earth and expressed awe at the program. Born May 1 1925 in Boulder Colorado Carpenter joined the Navy after high school and became a test pilot after training.

Nootebooms Celebrate U S Citizenship in Chanute

The Nooteboom family from Rotterdam became American citizens after a 45 minute ceremony in Fort Chanute Tuesday afternoon. Father Nooteboom and his wife Catharina, with sons Ranier 19 Peter 14 and Sammy 6, moved to Chanute in 1956 for better schooling and job prospects. They faced English language and schooling barriers but pursued education with help from the Fifty Fifty Class of the First Christian church and neighbors.

Carpenter Safe in Raft After Aurora 7 Orbit

NASA Mercury test pilot Malcolm Scott Carpenter completed three Earth orbits aboard the Aurora 7 capsule. After entering the Atlantic Ocean he was sighted in a life raft 135 miles northeast of Puerto Rico by a Navy P2V Neptune plane. Recovery efforts moved quickly as Air Force and helicopter units joined the search while Mercury officials reported fuel and reentry concerns were managed and Carpenter appeared unharmed.

Chanute Ministers Oppose Sunday Evening Baseball Games

The Chanute Ministerial Alliance voted unanimously to oppose Sunday evening games after a Recreation Commission request.
