A resident awoke to footsteps and muffled laughter on the dark porch after guests pressed an inoperative front door bell. Police responded, the scene clarified as neighbors visiting, and the broken bell was removed as part of the incident.
Walter Johnson longtime organizer of the states secondary road program and current engineer since 1945 is appointed chief engineer by Governor Fred Hall. He succeeds Ross C. Keeling who resigned last November. Johnson will be paid 13000 annually with McDaniel remaining as assistant engineer.
A one car accident on U S Highway 36 claims the life of Mrs Father Margaret Pickard 66 of Walla Walla Washington. Authorities report the crash occurred yesterday near St Francis Kansas and investigated by local police.
Humboldt gears up for a 2 30 parade down Bridge Street with buckboards buggies and a staged pageant. The Kangaroo Court and bean supper follow the parade with a 5 to 7 30 meal. A Topeka entertainment show at the high school gym and crowning of the centennial queen anchor the events.
A Parsons district court jury dismissed at noon without a verdict in the arson trial of John Hamilton of Chanute over the Plantation Club fire east of Parsons on November 20. The state alleged Hamilton helped burn the frame building with Harry Shurtz, who testified they planned to receive money from Bill Mendenhall, operator of a rival club.
A one car accident in Wichita early today killed Airman Connelly Williams Jr., 21, and injured six others when a tire blew out causing the vehicle to lose control and hit a tree. The crash marks the year's fourth local traffic fatality.
A 34 year old farmer James R Thomas of OSKALOOSA Kas was electrocuted yesterday when an antenna he was installing touched a 44 power line. The accident happened in Oskaloosa and authorities said he died at the scene.
The Civil Service Committee backed a new postal pay bill granting average raises around 8 percent for about 500,000 workers. It would cost roughly 162 million dollars yearly, offer a 6 percent floor accepted by the administration, and include most job reclassification powers though not all top bracket increases. The Senate sustained Eisenhower’s veto on a prior measure.

Charles R. Lander, 25, football coach at Lindsborg Rural High School, died unexpectedly of a heart attack last night in Lindsborg Kansas.
French Foreign Minister Pinay announced Eisenhower accepted July 18 to 21 for a Big Four chiefs of state meeting. US favored Lausanne, France and Britain agreed. Russia proposed Vienna but Austria’s occupation blocks it. Washington called the July 18-21 date a possible option with location to be decided in San Francisco.

The Federal State Crop Reporting Service announced drought ended in Oklahoma due to recent rainfall. Last week’s average rainfall reached 3.79 inches, 2.73 inches above normal.
Rain totals reached .79 inch in Chanute with a 30 minute downpour flooding alleys and streets. The rain boost lifted crop growth across the region, filling ponds and aiding late pastures as wheat harvests may begin by June 10 to 15 depending on conditions.
The Senate began voting on the Democratic highway construction bill and struck out a Davis Bacon wage clause. Sen McNamara and Sen Douglas pressed for a roll call but failed. Fred Hall demanded the resignation or dismissal of Oyster Threat For Tax AideTOPEKAP Walter Pratt chief of field service at the State Commission of Revenue and Taxation announcing other personnel changes. Pratt cited illness or absence as reasons for not reporting to work amid broader charges against the commission.
Clyde McQueen testified at Powell murder trial that on March 12 Barnett Masters asked for a name, then Powell drew a pistol from his bosom and shot Masters dead with no argument. The trial continued today in Richmond Kentucky.
Two non injury traffic accidents were investigated Tuesday. Samuel D. Johnson pulled from a parking area on West Main causing damage to his car and to Mariella Smith and Lee Ward vehicles. Johnson cited for failure to yield and posted a $10 bond. A second collision on US 169 near Chanute involved Richard V. Barnard and Cecile Elizabeth Cunningham with damage to their right and left sides respectively.
Senator Young says a reliable source indicates the 1955 wheat support price will be about 78 percent of parity. The official 1955 price is 82 percent of parity.
The 23 day building materials strike ended as AFL truck drivers and building laborers settled two year contracts with St. Louis dealers. The stoppage had tied up about 90 million dollars in construction and idled roughly 4 thousand non strikers.
