Forty four automobiles trapped in a downtown hotel garage for 33 days were freed on Wednesday. Cars came down two at a time via an elevator rebuilt after a driveshaft failure and a bankruptcy of the original hoist maker. Licenses from Tennessee Kansas and Pennsylvania were seen on the recovered cars.
Phi Beta Kappa awarded scholarships to three Kansas women: Debbie Bryant Wilson formerly Miss America 1965 66, Nancy Hardin daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Clifford Hardin and secretary of agriculture, and Barbara Avery daughter of William Avery former Kansas governor 1965 67. Hardin held a 2.95 GPA at KU. Wilson earned 2.86 and Avery 2.75.
Kansas will see about 500000 extra dollars annually in the general fund as fuel taxes rise July 1. The 2 percent share for the general fund funds administration of the tax with gasoline from 5 to 7 cents and special fuel from 7 to 8 cents. Distributors’ shrinkage allowance drops from 3.5 to 3 percent, boosting state revenue and altering allocations to counties, cities, and a new freeway construction fund.
A barge loaded with nearly 2.5 million pounds of wheat broke loose on the Missouri River near Walcott Kansas. Police were alerted and a helicopter rescued three men Silvester Hernandez Otis Cameron and Larry Roberts from the barge before a towboat tied it up.

A U S ground crew chief stole a four engine C130 Hercules from Mildenhall Air Base after a night of drinking and flew it toward Cherbourg France. He radioed his wife in Virginia then reported pilot trouble and asked for privacy. No radar or radio contact has been reestablished and a crash is not confirmed.
About 600 National Guardsmen and police swept the North Carolina A&T University campus in Greensboro and routed dozens from dormitories with gunfire and tear gas. One Guardsman and several police officers were wounded as gunfire continued. authorities secured all buildings except one incendiary area. Hundreds of students were taken into custody as a citywide curfew remained in effect after nights of violence surrounding a court injunction and demonstrations.
Apollo 10 crew led by Air Force Col. Thomas P. Stafford and Navy Cmdrs. John W. Young and Eugene A. Cernan charted landing sites and lunar landmarks during a busy day in lunar orbit. They slept little, repaired a jammed camera, and prepared for the 54 hour journey home set to end Monday in the Pacific near Pago Pago.
Topeka residents like Lyle Spring and Pearl Cloud note cloudy damp conditions and rain while farmer's wife Mrs Winters sees wind and dust give way to spring rain. Weather Bureau meteorologist Richard Garrett says temperatures have cooled since 1948 with below average temps for three years and more precipitation. Agricultural statistician John Wilson reports wheat moisture benefits, but crops like corn and soybeans lag planting, with marginal soybean and sorghum progress and potential vegetable delays in the Kansas River valley. The 30 day Midwest forecast predicts continued cooler than normal conditions into mid June.

Thirty four Erie High School seniors will depart Monday for Six Flags Over Texas near Arlington to spend three days and return Thursday. Sponsors are Mr and Mrs John Caylor and Mr and Mrs Julius Mills. Principal William Tipton noted the trip is not school-sponsored.
