Left Hand Pitch reports a large, thriving rose crop at W. N. Gardner’s home 1014 W. Ltd. The Gardners say this is the peak week for blooms and invite rose enthusiasts to visit and photograph. Fireman Richard Tripp aids in garden care due to Gardner’s poor health.
The Highway Department lists roads flooded and closed: U S 77 north of Junction City and between Junction City and Woodbine, Kansas 28 at Jamestown, Kansas 106 at Chapman, Kansas 13 at Council Grove and between Strong City and Cottonwood Falls, Kansas 99 north of Emporia, Kansas 68 north of Quenemo. U S 50 expected to close east of Emporia during the day.
Gov. John Anderson filled two Social Welfare Board vacancies and named six members to a new nine member Banking Board. Appointees include Helen Nickell and John Woelk to welfare and Haviline, Needham, Hutchinson, Wilson, Jones, and Matthews to banking.
Buffalo man Willis Caudell pleaded guilty in city court to three counts of passing no-fund checks. He received 30 day sentences on each count, to run concurrently, after his arrest last Saturday.
The city commission approved hiring an additional patrolman to strengthen traffic control on Main Street. Police Chief Lige Matlock said the new officer will focus on foot patrol and quick service, aiding in reducing violations as traffic calls rise since 1955. A second patrolman may follow if needed.
Rainfall upstream pushed the Neosho River toward flood levels with 16.45 feet above normal at 8 am and an 8.55 foot rise since 9 am yesterday. White City received seven inches of rain with flooding at Council Grove Strong City and Cottonwood Falls. Rivers over banks across eastern Kansas prompted cautious warning though no major damage or injuries reported yet.
Ottawa police report tractor overturned during grass cutting at the Ottawa Country Club killing 50 year old George W. Pope. The incident occurred today while Pope tended the course.
In Erie district court the slander suit by Tom Morehead against Dallce Rush proceeds into day two. Morehead alleges Rush showed photographs to Ralph Burghart at Spot Cafe in October 1959 with defaming remarks about Morehead, then Chanute police chief. Witnesses include Dr. Henry Baker, city manager R J Hayes, and others as the trial charts Morehead’s resignation and disputed photos tied to a civil action.
Erie sheriff's office probes a Friday break-in at Clyde Wilcox filling station south of town. About 400 dollars in goods vanished including 42 cartons of cigarettes 10 boxes of cigars six tires tools worth 50 dollars a wrist watch hosiery candy gum and more. Damages estimate 15 dollars.
In Montgomery the freedom riders vow to press on with their bus station segregation test. King said 18 riders remain and the group will head toward New Orleans while stopping in Mississippi if possible. The session in Montgomery focuses on nonviolence before resuming travel.
Two non injury accidents on highway K39 west of Chanute were reported yesterday and today by the Highway Patrol. A 1956 Buick driven by David G. Kaufman veered into a ditch, causing $350 damage. A second two car collision west of Chanute involved Sara Ann Winterrowd and Roger D. Milligan, totaling $300 and $200 respectively.
Congressional leaders and Fidel Castro clash over a proposed tractors for prisoners exchange. Senator Morse presses Rusk for policy, while Castro warns negotiations may end if insults persist. Reuther and Eleanor Roosevelt join a fundraising bid to supply tractors, with costs cited up to 3i/ munition.
AP report shows 24 hour period ending 9 am Tuesday with zero deaths in Topeka Kansas. May total stands at 37 while 1961 fatalities reach 198 with 1960 period at 161.
Two year old Max Culbertson son of Mr and Mrs David Culbertson of Benedict is hospitalized at Fredonia with burns from a fall in a dwelling incident.
