Wall mural highlights Chanute commerce history for bicentennial

A styrofoam wall graphic near the Bank of Commerce in Chanute outlines the city’s commerce growth since founding. It features an oil derrick plow railroad engine hang glider and silhouettes of Osa and Martin Johnson Octave Chanute and will stay up at least until July. Five workers plus city equipment install it next week.

Reforming Kansas Courts A Landmark Judicial Push

Kansas moves to overhaul its courts after a 1972 constitutional change. Chief Justice Fatzer leads a plan creating a unified system, nonpartisan district judge selection, a new Court of Appeals, and stricter judicial conduct with state financing to ensure equal justice across districts. The 1975 measure expands appeals capacity and speeds processing to bring cases to the people.

Protests Over Highland Park High Rise Plan Circulate in Chanute

Petitions circulating in Chanute oppose a proposed high rise complex north of West Chestnut and west of North Western tennis courts. The plan parcels 410 by 430 feet with a shelter, fountain, quarry and park amenities, bordering the USD 413 yard and an adjacent alley. Bus Crash Kills 30 Choir Students in Martinez Calif

A Yuba City High School choir bus plunged off the Martinez Benicia Bridge guardrail into the bay, killing 30 students and injuring at least 30 more. The bus carried 51 choir members plus two adults and the driver en route to a performance.

Air Midwest pledges full Kansas service expansion

Air Midwest spokesman Jim Pickett said the Wichita based airline will fully provide its 10 year CAB approved service to nine Kansas communities and one Colorado town starting late this year or early next year. The program hinges on delivery of four 19 seat Metroliner turbo props and will begin with phased schedules, aiming for a full certificated run by late 1976 or early 1977. Chanute City Commission Agenda Highlights Traffic Signal and Bid Openings

The Chanute City Commission meets Monday at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Building. On the agenda are bid openings for a public works and utilities complex in Chanute, a proposal for a 14th and S Santa Fe traffic signal, a water request for Rural Water District No. 9, a 1976 asphalt overlay project resolution, a Katy Park portion purchase request, a Library Board consideration, and a vacation of 9th Street. Suit filed to block KSCP salary appropriations

The Kansas State College of Pittsburg faculty group seeks a restraining order and injunction to stop using part of a 7.7 million salary appropriation before teachers salaries are settled. The Kansas Higher Education Association filed in Shawnee County District Court arguing proceeds should wait until negotiations conclude.
