Move Ends In Hutchinson After Chanute Couple Relocates

Paul Bennett of Hutchinson, formerly of Chanute, moved with his wife nine months after their move to Hutchinson. Mrs. Bennett handled nearly every detail, including moving day, while she was in the hospital for an operation. Meanwhile three Chanute teens were questioned by police after a complaint of taunting a man on Main Street. the driver, 18, and two 15-year-olds, were identified from a license plate and released with a warning.

Burglars Hit Two Erie Car Agencies in Early Morning

Thieves broke into the A. L. Ricketts and Gus Demler agencies on North Main, stole about $100 in cash and $350 to $400 in car parts. Entry was via broken windows, targets included a punched safe at Ricketts. Sheriff Sloan placed the break in between 2 and 5 am. Three checks were also missing.

Eighth Grade Diploma Ceremony Set For Chanute

Forty five rural eighth graders from Neosho County will receive diplomas in graduation ceremonies at the Senior High School auditorium in Chanute on May 21 at 2 p.m. Hazel Meeker says the speaker will E G Horine. Special music by Chanute High School music department.

Dial Buildings Planned for Area Towns

The Northern Kansas Telephone Co of Ottawa won a contract with Heckathorn Brothers Construction Co of Winfield to build dial office buildings in Thayer Altoona Benedict Buffalo Piqua Coyville Neosho Falls Fall River and Lafontaine. Construction may start in two to three weeks with concrete block brick faced offices on company property as the Freddonia exchange converts to dial operation later this fall. Exact conversion dates await further contracts.

Kansas Traffic Fatalities Log Sees Lower 1960 Figures

Traffic death log records 24 hours to 9 am Wednesday in Topeka. Data shows 141 fatalities in the 1960 period versus 176 in the comparable 1959 period, indicating a drop. The report notes figures for a 24 hour window ending Wednesday morning.

Resignation of Chanute Librarian Mrs Hensley

Mrs Vivian Hensley resigns as Chanute public library children’s librarian after eight years. She will move to Ellicott City Maryland to be near her son Army officer William T. Hensley. The Hensleys arrived in Chanute twelve years ago after her husband ran a local jewelry business until 1954.

Friday Deadline for Girl Scout Day Camp Registrations

Registrations for Girl Scout Day Camp at Camp Wonderwood are due Friday to Mrs. Leslie Cox 124 S Garfield. Fees cost $2 for Brownies and $3 for Intermediates. Camp runs May 31 to June 4 with daily sessions 1 to 7 pm except June 4 from 9 am to 2 30 pm. Staff meetings set for 7 30 pm Monday at Mrs Cox home and Tuesday at the camp for cleanup and prep.

Semi-Trailer Truck Crash Near Erie injures none

A 1955 GMC semi-trailer truck was damaged after failing to turn on Highway K47 three miles south of Erie. The eastbound truck struck a telephone pole and the Lakeview cemetery fence. Driver Gilbert Perry of Williamsburg Ohio was cited for driving while intoxicated. Hearing set in Thayer justice court.

Ashby Street Opening Planned at Owner Request

City manager R J Hayes said preparations are underway to open a street on Ashby between 14th and 15th at the request of a property owner who plans to build in the block. Records show the originally planned street has not been vacated.

St Paul Refuge Feasibility Seen by KU Engineer Study

A University of Kansas engineering study finds the St Paul wildlife refuge largely feasible with minor erosion concerns. The State Forestry Fish and Game Commission meets Friday at Pratt to review the KU report amid long running controversy and pressure to proceed with contracts before June 30.

Toronto Reservoir Dedication Planned by Kansas Leaders

Thirty five civic and business leaders from 10 southeast Kansas communities organized to direct the June 18 dedication of Toronto Reservoir. Alvin F. Grauerholz was named general chairman with John M. Rogers as assistant. The 2800 acre lake serves flood control and more than 20,000 are expected to attend the dedication with Sen Andrew Schoeppel as principal speaker. A $2000 fundraising goal was set for the event.
