A ripe strawberry shaped into a bouquet form was shown to The Tribune by Press Hilton. August Meyer reported a car fire near his home when the emergency brake partly set. Two Hutton School kindergarten groups enjoyed rides at City Park, but a blue parakeet died, dampening the outing.
Eight year old Jimmy Rose told his class that his father Wilburn Rose a Lockheed test pilot was killed in a Tuesday air crash near Mercury Nevada. The child’s mother urged bravery and teachers alerted the principal and Bergstrom Air Base as funeral plans were set for Council Grove Kansas.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee reversed course and voted down a provision to bar further U S foreign aid to many nations. It nearly approved a one billion dollar cut to Eisenhower's four point nine billion dollar foreign aid bill but postponed final action until next Tuesday. Chairman Richards announced the moves after a closed session. TOPEKA The Kansas Corporation Commission is reviewing a Pullman Co and railroads request for seven percent intrastate sleep car and parlor car fare increases aligning intrastate rates with Interstate levels.

Carl Killion of Chanute is hired as basketball coach and history teacher at Erie High School for the 1956-57 term. He replaces Stanley Wade who left for military service. The family plans to relocate from Chanute before the fall semester.
Two Chanute professional offices have moved to the new office building at Main and Steuben built by Hugh T. Jones Jr. Balch & Briley and David L. McCune have quarters. Investors Diversified Services moves today with Marlin Blackston as district manager. Other offices include Sterner & McDowell and Dr H F Swain. An open house will follow after all move in.

First class rises to 4 cents per ounce, airmail to 7 cents per ounce, with second and third class boosts averaging 75 and 30 percent over five years. In Galena Maryland a gasoline bulk storage plant blast and ensuing fires killed two firefighters and wounded at least eight others. The Kent Oil Company facility experienced two large explosions and several smaller blasts rocking four storage tanks.
Jake Tabler, 66, longtime resident of Columbus, Kansas, was fatally injured when a team of horses pulling a mowing machine allegedly ran wild, breaking through several fences on the Tabler farm. He was dragged for a distance and found by neighbor Lawrence Westervelt.
