President Kennedy pressed Canada to help contain the ideological struggle and discipline nuclear weapons. He urged Western unity to aid underdeveloped nations and pursue broader peaceful enterprises, stressing a shared planetary fate and the need for disarmament.
Mrs. Ted Ludlum spotted an animal in a walnut tree on 1806 S. Santa Fe. It proved to be a groundhog not a cat, lingering in trees as if late from hibernation. Onlookers gathered then it climbed down and fled.
A dedication and open house for the Evangelical Covenant church of Savonburg will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. T W Danielson speaking at both services. Pastor Willis Adell leads the church. Alfred Byrd an airman at McConnell Air Force Base Wichita was acquitted of manslaughter in the Feb 10 fast draw shooting of 24 year old William Christie who shared his apartment. Judge James J Noone ruled the prosecution did not prove felonious intent or culpable negligence.
Four people were injured in three separate crashes last night and today in the area. Victims include Glen Bercaw 14 Herbert D. Vance 16 Eldon Kuhns 39 and Jackie Beiter 23. Bercaw and Vance were treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital Kuhns and Beiter at Erie Clinic and Mercy Hospital Parsons. Police reported Bercaw struck by a car driven by Jimmy Holt and Vance's crash on a curve east of the city. Beiter suffered multiple injuries in a head on collision on US 59 near Erie.
Geneva AP reports separate proposals from the United States and the Soviet Union calling for the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Laos. The Soviets seek a 30 day pullout, with Laos factions or the government drawing the plan. Rusk pressed for complete removal of foreign military personnel including North Vietnamese advisors, to prevent Laos from becoming a staging area for subversion.
Neosho County Mental Health Association discussed creating a joint clinic for Neosho and Allen counties at a meeting in Neosho. Probate Judge Leslie Norton noted Allen County has funded a drive and would back a half mill levy, potentially raising about 32000 dollars with Neosho joining. Norton cited House Bill 125 enabling such levies. Neosho officials plan to seek county support, with a site to be determined. New officers were elected: Bob Geiger president, with Mrs. George Eaton vice president, Mrs. Norma Summers secretary, and Mrs. Norma Imhoff treasurer.
Seven people were injured in an explosion at the Halstead Bank in Halstead Kansas. The blast at 8 39 am damaged the new brick veneer building, blew out a wall and collapsed the roof. The bank had moved in days earlier and opened Tuesday.
Under Secretary of State Chester Bowles said President Kennedy is considering a summit with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. Bowles told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee the decision is up to the President and no decision has been made.
R L McKeighan a farmer called for jury duty in US District Court sent regrets to Judge Frederick O Mercer. He lacked proper attire due to a tornado that carried away most of his farmhouse including clothing. Court aides confirmed his story and he was excused.
Rains soaked much of Kansas early today with more expected after a one day respite. Northern two thirds received from a half inch to two inches, Rossville reporting two inches. Skies to clear tonight and Thursday with a cooler high near 70. stronger storms and isolated tornado risk predicted for parts of southeast Kansas, southwest Missouri, northwest Arkansas and northeast Oklahoma this afternoon from 2 to 3 PM CST.
