Willy Rawls of Hugo Oklahoma treated for asthma at the fire station after an attack lasting over an hour. He arrived at 11 25 pm and left at 12 35 am after responders used a resuscitator and the smoke source was traced to a smoldering chair.
Luis Campuzano, 22, a former crew member of the Lolita, describes the April 17 1961 Cuban invasion landing off Matanzas. He cites heavy resistance, air attacks, and significant casualties among Cuban militiamen and invaders, including the Houston harbor explosion and 14 hundred infantry with three hundred navy men. Campuzano’s family details and his plan to stay in Chanute.
An American pilot Edward Binning and four Australian passengers died when a Beech Baron crashed near Longreach Queensland. The Beechcraft was newly delivered from Kansas and Binning had flown from Wichita with demonstration flights en route to Brisbane. The wreckage was found five miles from Longreach.
In Rensselaer New York four year old Dicky Tompkins called police saying his mother Alice Tompkins was sick. Officers traced the address found the mother semiconscious from gas from an unlit hot water heater and she was not in critical condition at Albany Hospital.
The public library will host Story Hour at 10 30 AM with readings of How to Read a Rabbit by Jean Fritz and Penguins Are Penguins by Joseph Longstreth. Children and families are invited to attend.
The Spring Farm and Home Show opens at the National Guard armory with 30 inside booths of exhibits plus dealer and automotive displays. Two free entertainment programs are scheduled today at 3 and 8 pm and three more tomorrow at 3 5 30 and 8 pm. Registration prizes will be awarded after each set of programs. A carnival is set up north of the armory with Jaycees and Chamber of Commerce co sponsors coordinating booth space marking and parking. Exhibits close tonight at 9 and reopen tomorrow at noon.
Erie district court jurors returned a verdict for defendant Bertha Kennedy in Roy Babcock versus Kennedy. Babcock sought 25000 for a June 1955 traffic accident near Chanute involving both parties. Trial opened as first of three jury actions. four days long with panel ordered back Monday for Oswego bank suit.
A two car collision on a farm road intersection eight miles west of Lubbock, Texas, killed nine people including six children and left a child and an Air Force lieutenant injured. Victims were Ocie Degarte, 33, his wife Irene, 43, and their children Patricia, 11. Ocie Ray and Dolly, 10. Doris, 7. Don, 6. Richard, 2. Pearlie Mae King, 30. All are described as Negro.
At Bergstrom Air Force Base officials will investigate a claim by Mrs. Harry H. Pokrant that her 12-year-old terrier T-Tex died from a heart attack triggered by a jet sonic boom. The dog reportedly awakened, trembled, and collapsed after the sound barrier was broken.
Geneva AP British and Soviet foreign ministers failed to settle who should represent Laos at the Laos talks and postponed the conference opening. The US insisted on an agreed Lao delegation, while the truce commission reported a general halt in fighting though local outbreaks persist.
Joseph B. J. Abraham, born in Jaffa, Palestine, aged over 102, arrived from Israel with his 12th wife aged 43. He claims 65 children, heads a cult called The Calling of the 12 Tribes from a 200 acre Baldwin Michigan farm, and says his eldest son is 79. He once lived in Miami and Newark and holds an international driver's license issued in Philadelphia listing a September 27, 1858 birth date.
Indianapolis AP reports Tony Bettenhausen a 44 year old Tinley Park driver and veteran of 14 Indianapolis 500 races died in a crash at the speedway. His car slammed into the main stretch wall upside down near the pit area after a high speed practice run.
The Tribune offers free two week Job Wanted ads in classifieds for high school and junior college students seeking summer work. Each ad tops 20 words with name age and address. Ads run four consecutive days unless the student is employed and must be placed in person or by letter by 10 a.m. daily.
Nancy Johns daughter of Mr and Mrs Wendell Bowyer 420 N Grant is announced as a candidate in the Se Kan O Rama queen contest by centennial headquarters. She is sponsored by the Up and Atom 4H Club and is the 24th contestant entered for the centennial queen title as votes determine prizes over 1000 dollars for the top nine candidates.
Mrs. Mary Conger of Lola Kansas testifies to the House Agriculture Committee urging a government program to balance supply and demand in farming. She cites the price gap between farm inputs and milk sales and describes her 720 acre dairy with 225 Holstein cows as part of a systemic reliance on farmers.
About 100 southeast Kansas city officials from state and county agencies attended the annual district meeting of the League of Kansas Municipalities in Erie yesterday. E. A. Mosher and staff led sessions at the American Legion hall discussing new city legislation including retirement programs for city county and state employees. Erie Mayor Hollis Dunham welcomed attendees and Harvey Steele led the invocation after a Legion auxiliary dinner. Chanute representatives included City Manager R. J. Hayes and several city officials.
