A Chanute resident reported a missing power mower from his basement over the weekend. The owner later asked police to drop the complaint after learning a neighbor had borrowed the mower.
In GOLDSBORO North Carolina a prowler fired a random shotgun blast into a bed where seven children slept injuring three siblings including Jo Anne Grimes 13 and cousins Da vid H Grimes and Tommy Harri son 12. The assailant fled after threatening to kill the family at 2 am through a closed window.
The Kansas Centennial postage stamp issued by the Post Office Department goes on sale in Council Grove with 20,000 visitors expected for the first issue ceremonies. First day cover requests reach 464,184 as 15 regular staff and 56 temporary workers handle the rush.
John P. Spurgeon aged 54 of Cheney was killed instantly Tuesday in an automobile crash nine miles west of Anthony Kansas authorities said.

Ray Colvin of 622 S Kansas was elected president of the Chanute Junior Chamber of Commerce for 1961 62 at a JayCee meeting in the Maple Leaf last night. Colvin will succeed Ray Christiansen and will take office July 1 with an inaugural dinner and dance at the Tioga Hotel and National Guard Armory. New officers include Jack Groves first vice president Larry Mathews second vice president Bill Hosselt secretary Junior Ray treasurer. directors Carl North Dean Sutcliffe Jim Keller Kenny Kern John Barney.
Mrs. Mary Conger of Iola Kansas will testify Thursday before the House Agriculture Committee on what sort of farm program the country needs. She previously wrote a magazine article outlining the farmer's viewpoint on the current program and its troubles.
Two backing accidents caused minor damage yesterday. At 11:45 a.m. at 26 West Main a 1953 Ford backed by Billie Sue Holloway struck a parked 1958 Ford owned by Melvin Faulkner, causing minor damage to both vehicles. Later at 8:50 p.m. in an alley on Highland between 5th and 6th a parked Kansas Highway Commission car was damaged when hit by a 1955 Buick being backed by James L. Drumm.
The Kansas Centennial caravan travels along the Santa Fe Trail on an 800 mile run to Santa Fe New Mexico stopping in Burlingame and Council Grove. In Council Grove a commemorative postage stamp is issued and a mail re enaction occurs at the old post office oak tree near the Neosho River. Local celebrations draw thousands with bands and barbecues as notable attendees include Georgia Neese Clark Gray and Maurice Fager.

Two 12-year-olds were reprimanded by police and released after a report they were firing B-B guns at passersby. Mrs. R. E. Brown said her eight-year-old daughter was struck in the face by a pellet at 5 15 p.m. the shot narrowly missing her eye. The youths were found hiding in a barn near their home and police confiscated the B-B guns.

Lynn Hoskinson six daughter of Mr and Mrs Marvin Hoskinson Burr ton Kansas died Tuesday at Wesley Hospital Wichita after three weeks as patient at St Elizabeths Hutchinson She had been critically burned and was transferred to Wesley about ten days ago.
An Air France four engine liner carrying 61 passengers and 8 crew crashed in the Sahara about 75 miles north of Edjele. No survivors were reported. Among the aboard were at least five Americans including Alan Lukens US chargé d affaires in Bangui and his family.
George H. Walton Jr. of Topeka was named Kansas driver of the year by Gov. John Anderson. Walton has a 25 year highway safety record and drives for Holton Transport Co. He logged about 2,326,779 miles with no chargeable accident.
A smouldering fire broke out on the seismograph ship Janice Walker loaded with explosives about 150 miles southwest of New Orleans. The 10 crew were transferred to sister ship Sharon Walker as both vessels, owned by Berek D. Walker of Pascagoula, conducted readings.
