A 17 cent Montgomery Ward refund check dated December 2 1914 was found by Chanute residents Mr and Mrs Ole Ball while cleaning a home they purchased at 1711 South Central Avenue. A torn letter from Montgomery Ward in Kansas City accompanied the find addressed to A Hedeen of Vilas Kansas. The owner could probably cash the check if located. City Manager R J Mayes has a reverse pocket clock in his office. its backward time display confuses first time users.

Jet Bombers Collide Near Shaw Air Force Base
Two RB66 jet bombers collided during formation practice at 11 500 feet near Shaw Air Force Base South Carolina. One plane crashed in flames killing navigator Captain Julian T Stewart 32 of Miami Florida. The second bomber returned to base with severe fuselage damage and no injuries reported.

Fatal Missouri crash kills four in party of mayor's limo
Four people died and four were injured in a head on collision near Concordia Missouri involving a limousine linked to Kansas City mayor H Roe Bartle who was not present. Victims include Earl Hovey Donald Van Edwards Edward Booker Williams and two others from Kansas City. Injured include secretary Margaret Halstead Zenon Hanson and Ella Mae Steffens. An elderly New Mexico couple escaped unharmed when a tornado struck their three room house four miles inside the New Mexico Texas line. John Buckner 85 was reading a paper and Mrs Buckner 75 was crocheting when the funnel toppled the windmill and outbuildings including a milk house smoke house granary cow shed and several large trees.

Rig Destroyed in Gas Well Fire North of Morehead
The Star Spudder rig owned by A. H. Alcock was burned last night two miles north and four miles east of Morehead as two crew shifts changed at midnight. Firefighters faced heavy rain from 12:20 am to 7:05 am, pulled burning rig parts away, and one crew member Lem Beale was burned on face and hands. Alcock estimated the well free gas at about one million cubic feet. the rig was partly insured.
