Concord Calif AP Forty four persons died when a Pacific Airlines Fairchild twin engine airliner crashed in foothills forty miles east of San Francisco. Witnesses saw the plane plunge downward and a smoke puff was reported before impact. The crew included pilot Ernest Clark first officer R An dress and stewardess Marge Schafer. The flight originated Reno to San Francisco with 40 passengers and a three person crew. Officials reported wreckage widespread but not burning.

A union spokesman calls it a lockout as a federal arbitration ruling allowing job eliminations goes into effect despite a restraining order. Driver Charged After Earlton Crash
James H. Yatel, 36, of Ontario New York, charged with driving while intoxicated after his 1963 Olds left US 169 Curve in Earlton yesterday. He struck a parked 1950 Ford truck, hit a utility pole, causing $1,000 and $300 in damages. He pled guilty in Thayer justice court, fined $100 plus $6 costs. Trooper R. L. White investigated.

Emporia Broadview Hotel, seven stories and downtown landmark, was sold to Salina based Key Acres Inc. The company takes possession June 15 from the Emporia Hotel Corp. The price was not announced.

After four roll calls Wednesday night a 45 45 tie the Senate rejected 46 to 45 a jury trial amendment to the measure. The defeated amendment would have provided jury trials in criminal contempt of court cases arising from antidiscrimination injunctions.

Teen claims wind blew spit into face causing crash
In Iola Kansas Larry A Doe a 17 year old told police he spat from a moving car and wind blew it back into his face causing him to strike a telephone pole. The crash damaged the car hood grille and bumper and split the pole.

An attempted break in at Foster clothing store 111 E Main was discovered at opening. A pry bar bent the front door bolt and damaged the door sill. Police suspect fear of discovery halted the entry. Nearby break-ins reported at Burlington Mfg Co and Concrete Products plant last week. About 86 dollars and a five dollar stamp roll taken at Burlington. Small cash, three checks taken at the block plant. a cigar box with checks found in a wheat field and turned to police by Elmer Wellage of Chanute.

Police said two fraudulent checks cashed by the Chanute Discount Co. for a woman known there were turned over to the FBI. The $50 check on a Lakewood Colo bank was payable to Chanute Discount and signed by the woman, the $42.50 on a Springfield Mo bank was payable to a man alleged as the woman's husband and endorsed by her. The incidents occurred near the date last month when bogus checks were passed at Jack's Jewelry and Johnson's Studio.
