B J Truster reported two fishing rods missing over the weekend. One was found at a 17 year old’s home and the other redeemed from a pawn shop for $3. No charges expected. A water balloon tossed from a car damaged a Buick windshield costing $117.94. three Chanute teens and their parents agreed to pay.
In Paragould Arkansas a dynamite blast killed Edna Sexton about 36 and her five year old son in their bed as a corner of the two story apartment house was torn out. Charles Bittinger is missing and police seek the estranged husband for questioning. Nancy Bittinger 13 was slightly injured as others escaped.
OLATHE Kansas Edward C McGee 36 Merriam a supermarket chain executive is charged with obtaining money under false pretenses for allegedly parking his car on Frisco tracks to collect 3200 in insurance He told police he left the car in the path of the train and then fled after it collided with the train McGee had reported the car stolen and cited debt as a reason.
Dayon Ohio report details two blasts at United Fireworks Co causing 35000 to 40000 in damages. One firefighter injured minor leg. no other casualties. It notes 12th blast since 1931, with twelve deaths across prior incidents, including 1954 and 1955.
James M. Ward, 68, of Wichita died yesterday from injuries from a three car wreck here Saturday. The accident marked the citys sixth traffic fatality of the year.
The fifth annual summer job program for Chanute students will be sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Chanute High and Oska senior High, Dean Skinner announced. Dave Saker will chair the Youth Committee conducting a city campaign to locate jobs for teenagers including full time and short duties. 240 placements were made last year across retail, agriculture, construction, restaurants, service stations, offices and more. The State Employment Office will act as placement center. registrations from last year must be renewed if inactive. ages 16 to 20 are included, with some under 16 allowed for yard work and babysitting.
Two people were injured in a county road collision six miles south and one mile west of Erie at about 8 20 a m today. ERIE residents Warner Filley and his wife sustained a dislocated shoulder and cuts. Gladys H Rice of Erie driving a DeSoto escaped injury. Both cars a 1953 Dodge pickup and the Rice DeSoto sideswiped. Filley pickup rolled onto its right side and was a total loss. An Erie doctor aided on scene and Filley was taken to Erie Clinic.
Parkville Missouri Park College reports Alumni Hall burned last night marking its third major blaze in under two years. Erected in 1903 the building housed home economics on the first floor a theatre on the second and art on the third. Some kitchen appliances survived as students and firemen fought the flames. Previous fires destroyed Chestnut Hall in October 1955 and Nickel Hall upper rooms in February 1956.
Forecast calls for fair skies and gradually warmer conditions tonight and Wednesday. Low temperatures tonight expected 50 to 60 degrees, highs Wednesday near 75 to 80. Kansas weather bureau notes slight warming with possible scattered thundershowers by Wednesday afternoon or evening in western and central areas. Maximums yesterday ranged from 68 in Concordia and Salina to 77 in Wamego.
The Chamber of Commerce agricultural committee and SCS representatives met to plan watershed meetings in the Chanute area. The sessions aim to inform landowners about forming watershed districts under federal law and will involve creek watersheds with SCS and extension service cooperation. A planning session is set for 8 p.m. May 13 at chamber offices with attendees Mahlon Morley C. P. McKinnie Lester Griffith W. J. Sainer and Ebur Schultz presiding.
In New York a taxicab with the driver dead at the wheel struck five pedestrians, two seriously, and a woman passenger suffered shock. The 54 year old driver Fred J. Zeffer apparently died of a heart attack before the collision. The cab mounted a sidewalk, then veered back into the street and continued two blocks.
Washington AFL CIO Ethical Practices Committee opened hearings into alleged misuse of union funds in the Bakery and Confectionary Workers Union. Henry Kaiser said hearings pause until May 25, while Teamsters case already advanced with a 22 page indictment and May 24 deadline. Curtis R. Sims accuses President James C. Cross and former VP George Stuart of improper funds use. Cross defends taking gifts and phone bills as personal, with repayment.
Jim McCune elected president of Royster Junior High School student council for next year. Barry Gerken named vice president and Sharon Cooper secretary treasurer. McCune and Gerken are eighth graders. Cooper is in seventh grade. Campaigning was strong and the vote was close says faculty adviser Freda Betts.

At last night's board meeting four new teachers were approved for next school year. Velma Anderson, Roosevelt principal, resigned to join Wichita public schools. Calvin Cassady became Roosevelt principal, with Miss Anderson leaving the district. Mrs. June Bennett will teach half-day at Alcott and assist Laura Warren, while Robert Clemons will coach basketball and teach at Senior High. Kathy Wintle will teach girls physical education at Royster Junior High, and Miss Winkle nears graduation from Pittsburg State College in physical education.
About 75 girls in homemaking courses participated in a career day at Senior High School sponsored by the Chanute Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America. Dr Coretta Hoffman of Kansas State College spoke on homemaking as a profession and as a vocation, and will be the guest at tonight's first annual banquet in the school cafeteria.
Lawrence Kansas coach Phog Allen denied reports that Wilt Chamberlain would join the Harlem Globetrotters next season. Allen said he did not speak for Kansas University and that he had no statement about Wilt turning pro. Chamberlain noted Allen’s Buffalo remarks as misattribution and stressed he would wait to decide his status after eligibility expires.
Lt. John C. Jensen Jr. becomes commander of Battery B 195th Field Artillery Battalion succeeding Capt. Charles Rice who resigned effective May 1 to focus on private business. Rice helped locate a new armory south of Santa Fe Park.

In Skowhegan Maine a 15 year old boy died when a pontoon plane was taken without permission and crashed. Two woodcutters discovered Larry Boynton adopted son of Mr and Mrs Reginald Boynton in the wreckage after the wing struck trees and the craft crashed in a rough field.
City officials report the fog sprayer is active to combat elm tree worms spreading through multiple neighborhoods. City Clerk Howard Parsons says complaints rose as damp cool weather favored the pests. Spraying began after rain paused, with full-city coverage planned and possible around the clock operation.
