He noted financing and tax base issues and possible base expansion to $9,000 with the current 48 percent rate split between employer and employee.

TOPEKA AP The appointment of John W. Cunningham of Kansas City Kansas to the Kansas Corporation Commission was announced by Gov. Docking. The term starts May 15, succeeding James O Greenleaf of Greensburg. Cunningham, 47, a Republican, is a Wyandotte County resident with a long real estate career since 1946 and four children.
The Weather Bureau warns of scattered showers and thunderstorms across Kansas with cloudy skies tonight and Tuesday. Temperatures range from the upper 50s tonight to the middle 70s on Tuesday, with 30 to 60 percent precipitation chances. In central Kansas heavy rains were recorded at Mentor 4.20 inches, Salina 1.83 and Concordia 1.03. Sunday highs reached 68 to 83 and lows 50s to mid 60s. A second major fire in less than two weeks hit Pittsburg Kansas early today. Fire crews found Rowden's Sleek and Chic Beauty Salon at East Third Street involved, with the blaze spreading to Bottenfield Beauty Supply and two vacant buildings. No injuries were reported and losses were not estimated.
Gov. Hearnes urged block grants to let the Ozarks Regional Commission tailor aid to communities.
