District plans fall start for hot lunch facility delays

Grasso Named Superintendent for USD 413

John Grasso, current USD 413 assistant superintendent, will assume duties as superintendent effective July 1. The board votes June 7 to formalize the appointment after the resignation of Dr. Jerry Steele moves to Pittsburg. Grasso previously led Chanute as assistant superintendent and Cherokee as superintendent, with a long teaching career and degrees from Kansas State College of Pittsburg.

KC Power & Light rate hike judged excessive by staff

City Firemen and Officials Meet to Resolve Department Strife

Chanute City Commission and fire department leaders held a special meeting to bury the hatchet over personnel and administrative problems. Fire captain Bill Boaz alleged unfounded criticism, broken command, and harassment tied to a discrimination complaint, while Mayor Oscar Cunningham urged a clean slate and reaffirmed the chain of command from fire chief to city manager to the City Commission. City Manager Bob Bunting said the firemen must run the department themselves.

Chanute Housing Authority drops high rise project option

The Chanute Housing Authority voted to not submit a proposal for an additional high rise apartment building and to relinquish the option granted by the city. HUD rejected last year due to rent financing concerns. The city may pursue developers to fund a high rise as a commercial venture using federal aid.

Light frost Causes Little Kansas Wheat Crop Damage

Kansas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service says Monday's light frost did little harm to wheat, with the crop in good condition amid cool damp weather that boosted growth. By weekend 80 percent reached jointing, 15 percent heading. corn 25 percent planted. some sorghum and soybeans planted. green bugs and mosaic diseases reported in parts of the state.
