Record low temperature threatens Chanute crops

The Chanute area recorded a record low of 31 degrees at 5 55 a.m. with a two hour frost risk harming vegetables. Extension specialists warn frost damage depends on the 4 to 7 a.m. window and note FAA readings show 33 at 4 a.m. 32 at 5 a.m. and 31 at 6 a.m. Tomatoes and potatoes unprotected face potential damage.

Accused murderer moved from Hill City Jail to safer site

Dennis G. Sanders, accused of the April 20 murder of Linda Leebrick, was moved from Hill City Jail to a newer building in Hays amid fears of a lynch mob. He faces arraignment today. Leebrick, 23, an art teacher, was abducted and beaten to death near Hill City. her body was found April 22 in a gully near the Solomon River.

Competitive Walkathon Opens With Sprinting Pace

The March of Dimes Walkathon in Neosho County drew 233 walkers with a windy start and a straight country route. Dave Bain led early, finishing alone after four hours and 20 miles, earning about $130 in sponsor contributions. total walkers completing the course approached 120 and expected donations topped $3,500 to $4,000 for the campaign against birth defects.

Carter wins half of Kansas delegates in Democratic race

Former Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter predicted a 13 of 27 Kansas delegates for his bid at the Democratic National Convention. Delegates were chosen in five districts with 11 uncommitted, two Udall, one Jackson, and 21 alternates also named. Carter led in the First District at Hays with four of six delegates committed.
