500 Women Set to Attend Home Economics Meet Thursday

More than 500 women are expected at the Southeast Kansas District Home Economics meeting in the Municipal auditorium. Naomi Johnson will speak on The Stylish Look in Color and model garments while Paula Bishop discusses Our First Ladies. Mrs. Watkins will preside, registration opens 9 to 10, with local HD units recognized and Smurthwaite House slides shown.

Police court bonds and fines rise in April report

April figures show police bond and fine intake at 1130 up from 594 in March, with a four month total of 2946. Calls for service climb to 343. 81 misdemeanor and 1 felony arrests, 9 intoxication arrests, and 41 traffic arrests. Animal control records 57 dogs picked up, 4 reclaimed, 7 placed, 26 killed, 20 on hand.

Area Officers Aid Recapture of 17 Year-Old Escapee

Highway patrol officers from Chanute and Neosho County along with Sheriff George Neely captured a 17 year-old Oklahoma jail escapee northeast of Treece in Cherokee county. Trooper Lester Koch first approached the youth and was fired upon. Capt. Dick Hadsall and Neely were nearby in Hadsall's car. they joined the scene after a radio message from Erie.

Weather holds warm pattern with scattered showers statewide

Partly cloudy tonight and Wednesday with little temperature change. Tonight low mid 60s and Wednesday highs around the lower 80s. Topeka reports warm trend returning after a cold front stalled, with showers possible across Kansas and varied western cold snaps easing eastward.

Chanute Board Moves to Petition for Community Junior College

The Chanute Board of Education approved filing a petition to establish a community junior college under a state bill. The move allows match funds and in-state tuition parity for students in the district on a two year status, with state requirements to follow. The board also authorized converting 20000 of the building fund to bonds for buses and filled most vacancies, naming Garry L. Church as assistant high school principal and world history teacher.
