Four people died nine miles east of Emporia in a two-car collision. Miss Kansas 1965 Margene Savage, 20, of Florence, her mother Marguerite Savage, 47, James Kaminski, 45, of Emporia, and his wife Gloria, 43, were killed. Injured were Ray and Dora Blasche, both of Emporia.

Weekend crashes leave rider with broken leg. several hurt
Motorcycle rider Kelly Wendeln, 26, of 919 S Highland, suffered a broken leg after a collision at 3rd and Evergreen. Three others, Wayne Sparks 44, Georgia Kimble 59, and Flowers 52, were injured in separate crashes. Flowers passenger in a car driven by her husband 57, and Kimble charged with failing to stop for a sign. Police reported total losses for a 1947 motorcycle and a 1963 Volkswagen. Additional minor accidents and six fatalities from Kansas traffic over the weekend are noted, including Gregory Taphorn 18, Gladys Ratts 43, Myron L. Hall 48, Herbert Buick 55, and Mary F. Hergenreder 21.

Mahogany Paneling Stolen From South Valley Chapel
Thief or thieves broke into the South Valley Chapel near Chanute on Shaw road and took 75 sheets of 4 by 8 foot mahogany paneling, three large doors with windows, and several light fixtures. Sheriff George Neely said the break in occurred Thursday night but was not discovered until Saturday night. Oscar Swiler noticed the doors open Friday and later found more missing when he and Neely inspected the site Sunday morning. Entry likely gained through an unbarred window.
