President Johnson said no compulsory arbitration to prevent a nationwide rail walkout and that Congress may be asked later this week to provide mediation machinery. He offered no Vietnam troop recommendations, foresee no near decision, and outlined a proposed nine day no strike period with a five member board to mediate and report.
In Chattanooga Tennessee 18 year old ambulance attendant Thomas Richard Pursley helped deliver a 4 pound 7 ounce baby in the ambulance before it was struck by a car. The infant and mother were unharmed. Pursley and the driver were injured. The teen had missed a baby delivery seminar recently and had studied the manual that night.
Vatican announces Pope Paul VI will fly to Portugal for a one day trip on May 13 to join the 50th anniversary celebration of the Fatima vision.
Henry B. Jameson editor of the Abilene Reflector Chronicle told a Kansas congressional dinner in Washington that Kansans must craft a new image of the state. He urged promoting living conditions, culture and recreation, and highlighted income gains, longevity, aircraft manufacturing, education, and channel catfish to showcase Kansas’s opportunities.
A 1954 Ford truck driven by Reginald D. Coots and two passengers ran off US 169 a mile south of Chanute at 7 50 last night. Coots told troopers brakes failed, veered into a ditch and trees, ending after 200 feet. Vehicle total loss with $600 damage.
Ella M. Leigh, 33, was killed in Dixon Illinois after her car rolled downhill on a hill. Witnesses say she parked the vehicle and tried to jump back in as it started moving, but could not escape the path of the car.
The 15th annual Community Art Fair runs Friday to Sunday at Murray Hill School gym. About 25 adult entries and similar junior college and senior high works plus elementary pieces in five divisions will compete. Darrell Dishman of Missouri Southern College will judge and critique entries at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Mrs Caroline A Beck of 1519 S Evergreen was found ill at home yesterday afternoon and taken by Chanute Ambulance Service to Neosho Memorial Hospital. A Tribune carrier Dick Guinotte alerted neighbors after noticing the uncollected paper and heard television.
Wichita officials approved a $1.4 million city share toward a $21.5 million Kellogg Freeway project along U S Highway 54. The six year program funds right of way acquisition, representing 25 percent of total land costs for the two mile stretch.
Kansas State University engineers test an all in one brake accelerator pedal invented by C N Winkleman of Topeka inspired by a 18 year old crash. The device activates the brake with the heel and the accelerator with the toe improving stopping times by about 0.1 seconds at 60 mph.
Topeka AP reports Kansas traffic death log for 24 hours to 9 am Wednesday lists 46 fatalities for April, 1 for May, and 160 for 1967, with two previously unreported deaths included in the tally.
General Westmoreland urged President Johnson to dispatch 160000 additional combat personnel to raise U S forces in Vietnam to 600000. The request, reported by the New York Times from Saigon, seeks reinforcements to be sent promptly with a target completion by January 1.

US Marines won Hill 881 North after heavy fighting with North Vietnamese units. More than 200 Communists attacked a Leathernneck company, 22 Marines killed and 69 wounded. Total Marines killed 118 and 345 wounded. Communist deaths 502 plus claims of 1,000.

Two Chanute youths faced juvenile court hearings Monday in Erie over April break ins at the Chestnut liquor store 1112 N Santa Fe. One had a prior record and was ordered to the Boys Industrial School Topeka then paroled to parents with a Saturday work program condition. The other youth with no prior record was paroled to parents with no work participation requirement. The liquor store was broken into twice in April with one boy linked to both incidents.
Air Vice Marshal William Kilpatrick Stewart, 53, honorary physician to Queen Elizabeth I, died at the Royal Air Force Hospital in Uxbridge on Tuesday. The cause of death was not announced.
