Spring Farm Show opens with free entertainment planned
A large tent rises at City Park for the Spring Farm Show to run Thursday through Saturday with free daily programs. Sponsors tout one of a kind exhibits in Southeast Kansas and a total merchandise display near a quarter of a million dollars. Local volunteers include Floyd Bray John Gorton Marvin McCoy Paul Lowe Gail Malson Raymond Friederich Bill McCoy and Wayne M Taylor. Other events include amateur contests Chanute High School Drill and Bugle Corps performances a team pulling contest and a tractor trailer backing contest. Allen County’s spelling bee representative Mildred Crisswell reached the eighth round before finishing among 28 of 89 finalists with the word connoisseur ending her run.

The Junior Chamber of Commerce announces a road-eo for teenagers on May 15 at 1 p.m. north of the Senior Trade School. Open to teens with licenses or permits, the event offers three college scholarships at the national level. The winner goes to Newton June 18. state winner expenses paid to the national meet. Entry blanks available at Farm Service Store, 112 W. Elm, due by Friday 5 p.m. Parents must sign. Participants will be screened and certified. MANHATTAN Kansas The Future Farmers of America elected Lou Reinhardt Chanute as secretary at its two day state convention where about 1200 members gathered. Larry Figgs Effingham was named state president and Dean Ebel Wamego was chosen vice president. The Little River chapter won the safety award and fourteen chapters earned gold emblem awards while twenty received silver and fifteen bronze emblems.

Telephone Strike Cuts Links Between Paducah and Oak Ridge
Two private telephone lines between the Paducah plant in Kentucky and Oak Ridge in Tennessee were severed during a nationwide strike. The service interruption lasted from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Officials from Southern Bell said the vandalism was part of a larger act that cut about 100 phone circuits to isolate Paducah.

Burglars broke into the Michigan Electronics Inc. plant in Chicago after a voiced warning from an electronic guard. The intruders fled as police were called while engineers described the alarm as a gag test.

Two Airmen Die In Mishap Near Zarah Kansas
Two airmen were killed and three injured when their auto left a state highway near Zarah and crashed into a barbecue oven. The dead are James L Byrne 19 and Joseph Coleman 19. Airman Eugene B Rhodes 18 was in serious condition at KU Medical Center. Myra Davis 15 from Topeka and Curtis Ritchie 18 were in good condition. The vehicle was from Forbes Air Force Base Topeka and the accident happened near the junction of highways 7 and 10 about a mile west of Zarah.

Planes Hunt For Missing Navy Jet
Search planes hunted in Arizona and New Mexico for a missing Navy jet. Civil Air Patrol planes from Albuquerque flew the Navajo reservation near Toadlena and heard reports of an explosion.
