Aviation Day at Municipal Airport Draws Busy Crowd
About 500 visiting pilots and 500 passengers in 195 planes joined hundreds of spectators for Aviation Day at Municipal Airport. Exhibits included helicopters from Ft. Riley, the Topeka National Guard, Grandview and Olathe air bases, and a notable Helioplane by MIT professor Lynn Bollinger. McConnell AFB fielded three B-47 flybys. Don Sutcliffe won the spot landing contest. Meals for visitors were provided by Chanute guardsmen with breakfast from field kitchens. Kansas City led registrations with 82 attendees.

Fire chief C. W. Brennan said the four month loss in Chanute is about 2939 dollars, up slightly from 2936.18 the previous year. Alarms totaled 61 this year vs 61 last year, with 14 runs in April and no loss estimate recorded.

Burns Fatal to Humboldt Man
Humboldt resident Bertie P. Harless, 76, died from severe burns suffered when his clothing caught fire from an open stove while he dressed at his home. Born August 18, 1878 in Alabama, he moved from Ardmore Oklahoma to Humboldt and married Alta Bockover in 1949. His wife died in 1953. There were no immediate survivors. A graveside service was held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Chanute, arranged by Johnson Funeral Home of Humboldt.

Three Fayetteville visitors die in Pittsburg area crash
Six people died in Kansas weekend highway accidents. A car truck crash 12 miles south of Pittsburg killed three Fayetteville residents and critically injured a fourth. Victims were Goldie Shepley 43 Jamita Yvonne Jordan 23 and her 22 month old daughter Betty Darlene Jordan.

Grandstand Collapse At Greensboro Stock Car Races
A windswept fire burned a wooden grandstand at the Greensboro Fairgrounds track yesterday. It collapsed minutes after more than 2,000 stock car fans rushed to safety, causing four minor injuries and destroying or badly damaging twenty nearby cars.
