Beeler Jr. Fined $400 in Beer License Case
Erie man Earl Beeler Jr. was fined $400 and received 90 days jail time on two counts in district court after a jury verdict on beer sale charges. The sentences run concurrently. He remains in custody awaiting disposition of court costs. Beeler, owner of Rendezvous tavern in Chanute, had appealed former Chanute city court convictions for selling beer without a license and operating where not open to police inspection. He had operated the tavern via a Chanute license while residing in Erie. The case involved an after hours incident and a bootstrapped shuffle board club selling memberships for games and "free" beer while the tavern was unlicensed. City ordinances require a cereal malt beverage license and public access during business hours. The penalties include up to $500 fine or one year in jail, or both.
