Five Freight Cars Derailed Near Santa Fe Tracks

A chain reaction started by a released brake on a box car caused five empty freight cars to derail at the 21st Street Santa Fe crossing around 1 p.m. yesterday. Eighteen cars had been spotted about noon, and a derail sat on the main line to stop further movement. Track damage was minimal. workers rerouted and returned cars to the track by 5 p.m. No injuries reported.

New Low Temperature Records Shattered In Region

Unseasonably cold weather broke two longstanding marks yesterday and today. March 29 low of 23 degrees set in 1930, then 19 degrees yesterday. March 30 record of 22 degrees from 1926 tied in 1930, while early morning fell to 16 degrees. Tonight and Tuesday expected not as cold with lows 25 to 30 and highs 55 to 60.

Easter Egg Hunt Pace in Chanute Draws Crowds

The 17th annual Lions Club Easter egg hunt at Highland Park drew hundreds of children divided into age groups with prize eggs worth 3, 2, and 1 dollars. Two Kansas party leaders quit as districts pick delegates

Two major Kansas figures bowed out this weekend ahead of state conventions. Faint Radio Distress Signals From Liferaft Searched

SAN FRANCISCO AP A Coast Guard spokesman said faint distress radio signals came from a liferaft in the area where a nine man transport plane vanished off the California coast Saturday. Long range planes cutters and Navy ships searched 18 000 square miles widening to 26 400 as the search focused 800 miles west of Monterey where Capt Harry Baker 59 Fallon Nevada last radioed. The aircraft owned by Facilities Management Corp Los Angeles was en route from Wake Island to Los Angeles after refueling in Honolulu.
