A street poll in Chanute asks residents if the Bible should be used in schools as a literature source rather than a religious text. Opinions vary from support to caution about diverse beliefs and church involvement.
An 8.3 magnitude earthquake struck Anchorage Alaska at 5 36 p m to 9 36 p m CST during rush hour tearing apart downtown structures and triggering fires. Deaths reached three with 26 missing in Valdez and Seward reporting fatalities. widespread damage included oil tanks fires and crumbled Turnagain Bluff as President Johnson was urged to declare a disaster area.
Three Chanute fishermen Vyrl Evans Reynolds Huffman and Carl Walker reported five to six inch water level fluctuations lasting about five minutes below the east river dam. They ruled out wind and saw no quake connection but offered no explanation while noting it did not improve their luck.

Clyde Canting of Greensburg Kansas said he felt tremors apparently from the Alaska earthquake while staking out an oil site in Ford County Friday night.

Earth tremor reported in Valentine at 4 10 a m and in North Platte 130 miles south at 4 21 a m local Time. Newsman Wally Bazyn said it sounded like a dull roar and shook doors and windows for about a minute. Sgt Everett Slack and Memorial Hospital staff in North Platte also felt the movement.
AREA FORECAST calls for generally fair and cooler tonight then mostly fair and warmer Sunday. Low tonight 20 to 25, high Sunday in the 50s. Topeka AP reports clear to partly cloudy skies for Easter with a chance of drizzle but no meaningful precipitation. Top temperatures Sunday range from the 30s northwest to the 50s southeast.
A pickup truck and a car collided Friday at an intersection four miles west of Russell Kansas. Herbert J Black Jr a 38 year old resident of Gorham Kansas died in the crash. Authorities investigated the fatal incident and identified the victim.

A five to six foot tidal wave rolled west along the Louisiana and Texas coasts Friday night. No deaths or serious injuries reported. property damage appeared light. Eyewitnesses described boats tossed and docks jolted as waters rose along canals and bays. Seismograph at Spring Hill College recorded minor earth movement seemingly linked to a distant Alaska quake. Local witnesses saw inland effects with docks bobbing, ships pitching, and rivers swelling briefly.
Republican nominee hopeful McDill Boyd argues Kansas has top schools churches and climate and should aggressively market itself to attract business. He says outside perceptions hinder growth and Kansas boasts a wealthier dust bowl era image with fewer tornadoes than many states. Boyd arrived for a 4 30 pm coffee at the Tioga Hotel after visiting Pittsburg Girard Erie and Fredonia, with a 90 minute reception for about 100 people. Continued on Page 3.
Explorer Post 3 of the First Methodist church plans a Sunday canoe trip on the Neosho River from Humboldt to Chanute with 16 members and advisor Bill Slane. They will use four self made canoes, meet at 1 p.m., launch at 2 p.m., and expect to return about 6 p.m. Some will camp on the riverbank. This is their second Neosho trip. the first ran from Burlington to Chanute last Halloween. Minimum age is 14. no prior Scouting experience needed.
