A massive central Chile earthquake shattered a dam, burying the copper town of El Cobre with two million tons of mud and water. At least 26 killed elsewhere, hundreds injured, thousands homeless as aftershocks and rockslides hamper rescue. President Frei toured the area while crews cleared highways and power lines were damaged.
An Air Force F-102 unmanned fighter crashed in a farm area near Fair Play Missouri after an hourlong flight over western Missouri. Maj. Donald Feltey bailed from the plane at 12 000 feet near Hume Missouri and was uninjured. Two accompanying pilots attempted to divert the craft away from populated zones by creating drafts under its wings as it veered from Clinton to Warsaw and toward Sedalia before turning southwest toward El Colorado Springs.
Washington AP reports examiners recommended the merger of the Pennsylvania and New York Central railroads with strict conditions. The plan requires freight service over New Haven lines, and the examiners did not back using Penn Central to support New Haven’s bankrupt passenger operations without an offsetting economic plan.
In Rangoon Burma AP reports Dr Gordon S Seagrave known as the Burma surgeon died Sunday at age 68. He will be buried Wednesday at the Burmese hill hospital where he devoted his life.

In Saigon AP reports U S Navy fighter bombers struck Bach Long Island in North Viet Nam for the 13th raid since Feb 7. A Skyhawk was downed by ground fire but the pilot was rescued unharmed. Bach Long lies close to Hainan Island and the Chinese coast.
A 1953 Chevrolet driven by Phyllis E. Krone, 19, of 418 West Second Street, was listed as a total loss by the highway patrol after a single-vehicle accident east of town at about 5 15 p.m. Saturday. Damages were estimated at 350 dollars. the driver was not injured. The wreck occurred on a county road west of the Neosho River dam.
A community action group representing several counties will meet Wednesday night to discuss provisions of the federal Economic Opportunity Act and their possible application to southeast Kansas. John Kirkwood, Neosho County welfare director, is in charge of local arrangements.
City Clerk Howard Parsons reported light turnout for last week's night registration for the April 6 city election. The books close after registration day, with a prior night period also yielding few registrations. he estimated about 30 total night registrations and noted the office stayed open until 9 p.m. for five days in each period.
Supersonic training flights by Strategic Air Command B 58 Hustler bombers are planned Apr 1 to Jun 30 over a corridor from north of Hamburg Arkansas to Chanute Kansas, passing over Joplin Missouri. Bomb scoring near Joplin will measure simulated drops. no bombs carried. Flights may occur daily, usually not 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Mach 2 speeds above 35,000 feet. Booms may startle but will not injure people.
In Topeka the Education Committee proposes a Legislative Council study of state supervision of education and the education article of the Kansas Constitution. The House, during semifinal week, narrowly passed a land surveyor registration bill 69 to 54, sending it to the Senate. A six member food service and lodging board bill passed unanimously and goes to the Senate. Companion bills to fund federal land and water conservation and to create a recreation council were approved and sent to the Senate. A bill to authorize insurance purchases by unified school districts passed 109 to 5. Preliminary approval was granted to allow blue or black ball point pens for marking ballots in addition to lead pencils. House Republicans set a caucus as decisions loom on the school foundation and finance programs.

AP reports cloudy blustery conditions across eastern Kansas with western areas clearing. The Weather Bureau forecasts a break in clouds and springlike temperatures returning for the rest of the week as warming moves in.

A $1 530 000 Community Facilities Administration loan plus $480 000 from the college will fund a residence hall for 202 women, food service for 900 students, a manager’s apartment, and an addition for 172 men at Kansas State College Pittsburg. Senator Frank Carlson reported the package.
Washington announced a 1.55 million dollar Community Facilities Administration loan to Tabor College in Hillsboro Kansas for a new campus cafeteria serving over 300 students. The college will provide 10000 dollars of its own funds. Rep Garner E Shriver R Kan was informed.
Ambassador Maxwell D. Taylor met with Secretary Dean Rusk and advisers in Washington to discuss the Viet Nam situation after two months of U.S. bombing. Taylor flew in from consultations with President Johnson and planned a White House call and a luncheon with Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara. He told reporters that things are turning for the better in Viet Nam.

Webb City, Missouri. Roy Hunt, 23, a member of the Joplin Show-Me Diving Club, vanished during a second dive while helping police recover a car at the abandoned Daylight mine pit. Divers found the car on a ledge 70 feet deep. full pit depth about 130 feet.
